Nappy rash - 1st time mum - advice please!

I am sure this has been asked many many times, but what is the best thing for nappy rash?
DD has had a rotten cold and is teething so has been having runny poos and for the first time has red sore bits on her bum and cries when I'm changing her nappy (she's 5 months).
I've been using sudocrem with zinc&castor oil cream as a barrier. My HV tood me that sudocrem can cause burns if it is not rubbed in - is that true (I'm a bit scared of the stuff now!)
Any other recommendations?

I have never heard that about Sudocrem and suspect you may have another slightly odd HV but as I don't use it myself am not sure.

I swear by Kamillosan which is predominantly camomile and lanolin. It is very gentle and has always sorted my two out with 24 hours. It is an ointment so acts as a barrier as well as soothing and healing.

Hope your DD feels better soon- teething and a cold is not a fun combination!

well I've never heard of sudocrem causing burns but I'm prepared to be corrected. I know using too thick a layer of sudocrem can cause more problems than it prevents, because it stops the skin breathing so perhaps that's what your HV means.

I'm sure you've been told all these things but you could try nappy off time with no cream; bepanthan cream is highly spoken of; also try using cloths or strong kitchen towel soaked in chamomile tea rather than baby wipes.

your poor dd, she's copped for the lot at the moment hasn't she? As ever mummy cuddles are the best medicine for whatever ails you.

thank you RBH and Bee - there are just so many creams and potions out there that I had no idea where to start! Someone even told me to put beaten egg whites on her bum!???

Egg whites is actually supposed to work very well. Never seem to have eggs in when the baby has nappy rash though!

Are not is

I used bepanthen on my DD when she was young and it was really great!
Sudocrem is very good too although I'm a huge fan of metanium - not sure about using it on a 5 month old though!
I'd also avoid baby wipes and make your own - they've made a huge difference to my DD's poor rash prone bottom.

A layer of microfleece in the nappy, disposable or cloth, next to skin, can help. QD have blankets for £2 which I cut up, or you can buy fleece liners.

Also, rather more expensive, but a silk liner might work too. Naturally antibacterial I think.

And I second using own wet wipes, I cut up an old bed sheet and use that with plain tap water and nothing else. I sound a right cheapskate !!

Thanks everyone - I've been using cotton wool and water but like the sound of making my own wipes!
A silk nappy liner!!! I suppose it's never too early to get them used to the finer things in life........

Sorry if you think this topic is done and dusted and if this message is a little late but it is advice for any parent who is wanting a nappy cream recommended.

The best cream I have ever tried and I use now and nothing else is Boots Medicated Nappy Cream in a big white tub. It is about £3.00 something, (good value) and is excellent. It acts as a barrier as well as a cream to treat nappy rash and soreness. It clears up mild/moderate soreness within 1-2 applications (as good as Sudocrem) and stops any redness before it starts.

Try it. I bet u will find u don't need anything else after buying this.
