Babies passively smoking neighbours cigarettes

We live in a flat. Below us the neighbours chain smoke and as it is an old building, the smoke comes up into our flat despite trying to block it. We have spoken to them and they don't care. I'm so upset as I can't prevent the kids from passively smoking. It is making me feel like such a crap mum. Not really looking for advice, just sympathy I guess. I wish we could move, but unfortunately it costs so much :(

I wouldn’t worry about it too much, these things smell much worse than they are. Your kids probably pick up more toxins on their average buggy ride to the park.

I would find that upsetting too, OP. I don't know what you can do but it's not nice Sad

I posted similar recently and people suggested an ozone air filter thingy.

I thought a baby was passive aggressively smoking a cigarette which belonged to the neighbours

Do you have carpet down?

SylvanasWindrunner · 18/10/2021 17:17

Oh yes an air purifier might help?

Unsure1983 · 18/10/2021 17:20

It'll be fine and you're DEFINITELY not a bad mum.

I know this isn't reassuring but you're right to be concerned. There's studies re apartment blocks and children in non-smoking households living above smoking households and there's a definite health impact. If you can't move, I'd try
a) do they rent? If so, see can you link with landlord re smoking inside. Maybe they might help?
b) can you put carpets etc/ some other physical barrier to the smoke?
c) air purifier. As good as you can afford.
d) ventilation. Open windows etc as much as possible.
I'm so sorry you're in this position. I really feel for you.

Thanks everyone. Does carpet work? A lot of it comes through our kitchen. Would I need to carpet the whole flat. I think it would cost so much. We try to keep the windows open, but we also have long term building works going on in the building next door and they are constantly sawing and creating a lot of metalic dust, so I have to choose between cigarettes and building dust :(
