How to help DD sleep with a cough?

WinterBug2021 · 16/10/2021 21:56

Night 8 of the dreaded cough. It doesn’t seem to bother DD (1yo) during the day, but at night she can’t seem to settle without coughing.

Negative covid. But she seems to have caught one thing after another since starting nursery, with no break. Norovirus, HFM, tonsiltius, ear infections, S&D etc…

Nose is clear, but is streaming clear mucous. So the cough is clearly from this draining into her throat at night.

I’ve tried; calpol plug in, snuffle babe on feet, baby vicks on tissues, calpol, raising the cot, pillow under the sheet. Any other suggestions? As we are both suffering with a cough and lack of sleep. Plus she is also teething.

Window open. Ds has asthma and a window open is a necessity..

WinterBug2021 · 16/10/2021 22:01

@Brollywasntneededafterall window is already on vent. But ground floor so can’t open fully. Door is also slightly open to allow air flow.

Not much help tonight but we alway find a humidifier helps. Something to do with putting moisture into the air. I don’t understand the science but has to do with central heating and less damp/ gaps in modern houses. Always worked for us, and for MIL who has a lot of asthma related issues.

Vicks directly on chest and/or back. Another one I haven't tried but heard good things about is Vicks on feet and then socks on. Hope she's ok

WinterBug2021 · 16/10/2021 22:07

@2lsinllama thank you! Just Amazon primed a Vicks one. I had put some hot water in a bowl with some olbas oil in her room, so hopefully that will be more effective.

@Littlepinkpeg thank you. I’ve tried snuffle babe rub on her feet, and back. She just doesn’t seem to be catching a break.

@WinterBug2021
Hope you both get some sleep

SweepTheHalls · 16/10/2021 22:10

Humidifier, honestly, a game changer.

WinterBug2021 · 16/10/2021 22:14

Thanks. I’ve ordered the “VICKS VUL520E1 Mini Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier” is this any good? Just typical that Amazon prime isn’t until Monday!

Another vote for humidifier. I just have a cheap Amazon one. It's like magic

QueenLagertha · 16/10/2021 22:18

Yip that one looks perfect OP. Similar to mine

PlanDeRaccordement · 16/10/2021 22:21

My DC with bad asthma presented this way. Night coughing is very common way for asthma to appear in infants/toddlers and usually at 6mos-1yr if it is triggered by dust mite allergy.

If she coughs 10 nights in a row, it will be time to get her to a doctor.

Namechangesagain · 16/10/2021 22:22

Just from another perspective has she tried any new food recently? My daughter has alot of allergies and a constant dry cough is one of her main symptoms

Which has been fun with covid 😶😶😶😶

Morechocmorechoc · 16/10/2021 22:23

I'd try and get her more upright if possible. Laying down with a cough is miserable

Babymamamama · 16/10/2021 22:30

Make some hot squash lemon is best but any flavour will do. Let her sip that. It will stop the cough reflex.

WinterBug2021 · 16/10/2021 22:31

@QueenLagertha thank you!

@PlanDeRaccordement I have the same “bug” atm, constant coughing from mucas dripping down my throat, so I can sympathize with her. She is coughing in the day, and being up the mucas, just struggles at night. But will take her to GP if this persists.

@Namechangesagain No, she also has lots of allergies (which is why I’ve avoided honey and lemon), so very restricted and limited diet. Oh dear, bet that hasn’t been fun! Hope your DD is ok.

@Morechocmorechoc will try raise more, but already blocks under the legs. She is only just one, so wary of putting things inside the cot.

Ah sorry to hear she also has allergies. Its tough isn't it! I only mention it whenever I see these threads as it took 9 months to get a diagnosis and If i could help 1 person not go through that its worth it!!!

Hope you all get some sleep soon
