Do I take the dive into ditching the dummy

So my DS is almost 17 months. I'm wondering whether to ditch the dum.
He's just got over hand foot & mouth & has now developed a cold & is always soooo congested when he gets them that we have a rough few nights. I'm thinking as 1) he will be keeping me up any way and 2) his nose is blocked up and he can't sleep with dummy in.. do I go for it?! If so tips on doing so?!
He's good at giving it to us when we ask for it in the day as we've always tried to limit it to a comfort purpose but I don't want to stress him out poorly either, advice please :)

Ime a poorly dc needs their comforter...
Mine binned them on their own about 3yo. No tears.. No routine disturbed... Yabu to take away something your dc needs right now...
Imo. Replace /boil regularly... Bedtime and naps only. My dc have no speech or teeth issues!!

I took my DDs dummy away when she had a cold too and am really glad I did. She couldn't use it whilst she had the cold anyway as she was so snotty and couldnt breathe out of her nose so seemed like the perfect time. I just binned it and never looked back. I helped her settle with bum patting, head stroking etc instead. Despite people saying their children had dummies for years and were fine, the NHS do recommend ditching it by 1 and this recommendation is based on research so I think it's best to try and get rid if you can.

My 18mo DS has a dummy and ive no intention of making him give it up. Its big comfort to him. My plan is get rid when he's old enough to understand.
