My 2 1/2 year old hit his head today, was ok all day, just walked into his room and he's got a fever.

My little boy was at his nana's today, tripped and hit his head on the side table's corner. Quite a bit cut, we put steri strips on it and it's swollen.

He was home at 2pm, had a sleep in the car and a cuddle after, seemed absolutely fine all day. We've been playing just normal. He didn't eat much but he's generally not the best eater.

Bedtime at 7 as always, everything was normal. I just walked in to check on him and he had a 39 degree fever. I'm now worried sick that this could have been caused by his injury. Would you take him to A&E now?

My husband is out and I have a 5 months old baby at home. I feel sick.

I think you need to have him looked at yes in case the cut is infected.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 15/10/2021 21:58

Yes. A&E.

Better safe than sorry.

Hungry675tf · 15/10/2021 22:00

I can see why your worried, but no I wouldn't do anything other than keep an eye on him.

If you are really worried you can ring 111 for advice?

I would ring 111 and personally would probably want it looked at. Especially when they are at an age when they can't reliably tell you how they feel. Was the cut significant if it needed steri strips (not sure what these are- sorry)?

Notthissticky · 15/10/2021 22:03

Can you call 111? Is there a neighbour who could help? Can your husband come back soonish?

I can totally understand why you're scared, but as I'm sure you know they can spike fevers out of nowhere without any obvious cause... I thought I'd let our toddler overheat on a hot spring day. He went to bed fine but woke up two hours later with a 39.5 degree fever. I felt sooooo bad. Turns out he had slapped cheek, and it was just coincidence that it happened after a day in the sun.

Good luck

gamerchick · 15/10/2021 22:04

It might be a coincidence but I would get some advice OP.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 15/10/2021 22:11

If a cut on a head injury of a 2 year old is serious enough that it needs steristripping it’s enough reason to get it checked. If their temperature is doing funny things (high or low) after a bang to the head you should get checked out. And that applies to adults too.
I would call 111 to get some advice and get hubby home in case you need to go in

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 15/10/2021 22:12

It is probably unrelated-you don’t tend to get an infection leading to that kind of temperature within the short time frame here. If you’re worried though phone 111

SingingWaffleDoggy · 15/10/2021 22:17

It wouldn’t be from infection yet but ‘could’ be related to the head injury. I say ‘could’ as it’s probably not but it is a possible complication that can be serious. I don’t mean to panic you but I’d play it safe with a little one

Loopyluce88 · 15/10/2021 22:19

If you haven’t already, call your husband to come home and call 111 and see what they say. They’ll probably tell you to go to A&E just to be on the safe side.

gemloving · 15/10/2021 22:21

Husband is coming home, bags are packed. Calling 111 now

Give him calpol and monitor. I don't think a bang on the head would cause a fever.

gemloving · 15/10/2021 22:37

@SingingWaffleDoggy done that. Waiting for a call back now. He's awake and he's responsive, talks normally which is a good sign but still worried.

OP posts:
SingingWaffleDoggy · 15/10/2021 22:53

If he’s otherwise well it’s very likely it’s something unrelated. But there is a condition called neurogenic fever which is why anyone with a serious bang to the head followed by a temperature should seek advice. I don’t say this to panic you because if he seems otherwise well I’m sure it’s just a coincidence but just to make people aware that it’s a potentially serious complication and not to dismiss it

gemloving · 15/10/2021 23:07

@SingingWaffleDoggy 100% that's why I'm worried. He's fallen asleep next to me whilst I wait for the call back from 111 (a doctor)

I'm less panicky because he's been chatting to me just fine and the temp has gone down due to calpol. I just hope it's nothing serious. I'd never forgive myself.

OP posts:
SingingWaffleDoggy · 15/10/2021 23:15

Please don’t worry, it’s not usually an initial symptom and wouldn’t usually be seen in someone who is otherwise well. I’m very reassured that he has been awake and his usual self since the temp.
I only mention it because it’s important that people know these things can happen. It’s rare but possible and I’d hate to think someone might find this thread in the future and not seek medical advice.

Adding a picture of the cut

My 2 1/2 year old hit his head today, was ok all day, just walked into his room and he's got a fever.

FWBNC · 15/10/2021 23:36

Aww bless.

Hope everything's ok. If you don't go to A&E I'd set an alarm to check on him through the night.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 16/10/2021 00:13

I'd go to A&E.

OverweightPidgeon · 16/10/2021 00:17

111 will tell you to go to A&E , they seem to for most of the calls they get. Hope he’s ok x

gemloving · 16/10/2021 07:37

We've been to A&E, they were absolutely brilliant and are not concerned, however they do want us to monitor him.

He's actually been coughing a lot in the night, blocked nose etc morning and it seems to be more of a coincidence that he's developed a fever. It's not COVID, we all took tests.

He is his normal cheeky self.

The dummy fairy was supposed to come yesterday but we've decided that'll happen next Friday.

OP posts:
rainbowstardrops · 16/10/2021 08:27

Oh bless him! Glad you got him checked out

FWBNC · 16/10/2021 08:27

Good to know A&E weren't worried!

Hope he's feeling well today! Probably tired after his nightime jaunt to A&E.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 16/10/2021 09:51

I’m glad to hear he is his normal self

GoodnightGrandma · 16/10/2021 09:53

He probably fell because he was starting to feel ill, rather than the bump causing it.
Hope he feels better soon.
