Is a complete lack of wet nappies the only concern?

My DS has a virus. He is off his milk but managing to take small amounts and a bit of juice every now and then.

I've been told to watch for dehydration / lack wet nappies.

When I've been asked it seems doctor is only concerned if there is a complete lack of wet nappies. DS is having some but they are much reduced from his usual, maybe two very small patches of wee in the nappy per day. However I'm being told that as long as there is something then it means he is getting enough fluid as he's got enough "spare" to produce some urine.

I don't like to question the doctor but is this correct, are they only concerned with a complete lack of wet nappies rather than significantly reduced but still some?

A tiny little bit of wee isn't a wet nappy IMO. I'd be asking for them to be seen by a professional.

Generally yes.

There are signs of concern, excessively high temp, lethargy, abdominal breathing are a few.

Try syringing 10 ml of water/juice into him every 10 mins.

I was told this last time DD was ill and off her food/drink. How old is your little one? If old enough you could try ice lollies, it's one of the only ways I could get fluids into DD, that and syringing water into her mouth.

2 very small patches in a whole day is as good as no urine output, which is a very worrying thing - i would be getting him seen very very quickly tbh. Severe dehydration is a scary thing.

Doctor is wrong. How old is DS. Call 111.

Checking soft spot on top of the head when he's lying down. If noticeably depressed when he's laying down he's badly dehydrated.

He's 8 months. I will call. He keeps vomitting as well which won't be helping. Thank you.

If he's 'floppy /lethargic' when laid down that's also a sign of bad dehydration, as is the skin pinch test (check Google for this can't remember the exact details).

NappyQuestion22 · 13/10/2021 15:19

He's not floppy but he is exhausted. He's slept practically all day and his lips look quite dry also.

Doctor said to me to feel inside of mouth to check for dampness.
