Anyone’s kid just never point ?

I’m very worried about my 24 month old he has never pointed if I ask him where something is he will just look in that direction instead if he wants something out of reach he will reach towards it and squeal until you give it to him. He has no words yet. He does clap when I ask him to clap his hands or if he feels like it but he has only recently learnt this. He sometimes waves bye. I have him in speech therapy for the past 6 months but still no words. He does seem to be progressing otherwise though. We do have a concern it may be autism and we have an appointment in December for this but in the meantime I am curious if anyone else has any experience in this. He doesn’t do pretend play yet but he is extremely affectionate, has great eye contact , loves peoples company , always wants to be up on your lap , brings us booked to read abd toys etc and responds to his name and simple commands like close the door etc. We had his hearing checked at 16 months all looked ok except one test which was inconclusive and we are doing this test again on Wednesday. I also just started him in nursery full time 3 weeks ago before this he was he was home with me and his dad.I should add he was a bum shuffler and late to walk only really took off 2 weeks ago . Apologies in advance for the long post. Thanks

I also should add that I had worried from 15 months of age and got him out on the list then and got a call last week that we may be getting him into early intervention any day now.

Mine didn't point...he was behind on speech too, but he got there talking in the end. Just skipped the pointing for some reason

@Screwcorona thank you! This is so good to hear ! I feel like he will skip it too !

Wonder if he may be similar to mine. He started talking about 2 and a half and now at 3 and a half years old he's doing great.
He was at home with me a lot and I suppose he didn't really need to ask for much as my only child at the time. He started nursery a few months after turning two and I think the extra social opportunities helped

My son was a lot like this. He has ASD. He did learn to do everything eventually though, he’s in normal school, talks brilliantly, has friends, and is averagely bright.

Your child may be neurological and just a little slow to learn some skills but I say this because I was terrified my son would be autistic. I spent most of his toddler years very anxious over it but in all honestly life is good ☺️

I could have written this about my 21 month old. The health visiting team will review him at two years and consider a referral to SALT if there's no improvement.

He didn't start walking until just after 18 months but now runs around all the time. Maybe he'll catch up with talking too?

FinnsMammy · 11/10/2021 22:23

@Screwcorona and @Nahhh thank you for your positive stories. I feel like he is just slow and doing things on his own time as long as he talks eventually I’ll be so happy I feel like I will get all the big milestones in his second year! ASD doesn’t scare me in the slightest I just dint want him to be non verbal forever. We had our first speech therapy appointment last week in a bout a month and she said she noticed a big difference in him so let’s hope it continues! Even if he said mama I would be over the moon . X

@PolytheneRam I’m so glad I’m not the only one going through this right now 😌 I’ve read lots of articles that lots of late walkers are so focused on walking that they talk late too this is something that I keep reminding myself and I’m hopeful this could be true for my little guy! We have only just got the referral now too as he just turned 2. Best of luck with your little boy hopefully they will both catch up in no time x

@FinnsMammy hiya, I was just wondering if there is any update on your son? My little boy sounds exactly the same as your little boy in the first post xx

FinnsMammy · 20/03/2023 13:03

@Mummylove89 hes doing good but still non verbal. We moved back to the Middle East in November as we couldn’t get regular services for him in Ireland and now he is in regular weekly OT and SALT. He’s still not talking or pointing but he understands a lot more and is a bright happy little boy. Lately he is becoming more vocal and interacting more with his little sister and playing better so we are quietly hoping this is the start of him talking but we will have to wait and see.We don’t have a diagnosis as of yet and we got the genetic testing WES results yesterday which came back all clear. At this stage I’m guessing it’s potentially ASD but it’s hard to say as he doesn’t tick all the boxes. As we are living in the UAE our focus right now is to get him lots of SALT and OT rather than a diagnosis. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions xx
