PFB is ill!

Okay so I'm aware that I am very prone to overreacting when it comes to my 8 month old PFB but I'm after a bit of advice.

We've all had a nasty bug make its way through the house, coughing, very chesty and cold symptoms. We (me and his two brothers) have done PCR Covid tests which were negative (his brother did more than one) so I am confident it isn't that.

My 8 month old now has it and I'm worrying. It's been over a week with cold symptoms, he's now started with a raspy chesty cough which I can hear when he's breathing. He also seems to be slightly short of breath, he can't breath through his nose. It's not laboured but it's like after you've done a brisk walk or something if that makes sense!? There's also green gunk in his eyes.

I've been keeping a track of his temp which has been okay but tonight it's 37.6, with Calpol it's gone down to 37. I appreciate that's not a fever but it's higher than normal for him and he feels very warm to touch.

He hasn't eaten food for about 4 days but will drink milk although can be very sicky after it.

However overall he still seems quite smiley and will babble and laugh but is sleeping more and less playful.

Would I be ridiculous to go to the GP tomorrow with him? I'm worried he may have a chest infection.

Not ridiculous, take him

Of course you should ring GP with worries over such a little PFB

just confused about having a PFB with brothers? not to derail but ??

Sorry should have specified, brothers are my step children 🙂

Thank you. I did ring them earlier in the week and they didn't offer me an appointment just said on the phone that as long as he was drinking it was fine but that was before the chestiness so definitely feeling I should take him.

Do you think they'll see him with a cough without having a PCR done? As I say we all did them so didn't feel it necessary to put him through it too.

@PFBMadness I'd phone 111. You said his breathing isn't laboured as such, but any change in breathing should be flagged to a medical professional.

Don't worry about not having had a PCR test done already - if they need to see him, they'll be able to make arrangements (DD was seen in a "hot hub", which was basically a portakabin in the hospital car park).

Loubiemoo · 10/10/2021 21:17

Ring 111 for advice if he is having trouble breathing.

PFBMadness · 11/10/2021 07:53

I rang 111 last night as his temp reached 39.1 and his breathing sounded very chesty. They advised he was seen within 2 hours by an out of hours service who would call me back within the 2 hours... They didn't call me until 6:45 am (I rang 111 at 12am) and were closed when I called back 10 minutes later!!

Really disappointed.

I did manage to get his temp down and he slept which was good though. However he's woken up again with a high temp and chesty breathing so am taking him somewhere this morning.

@PFBMadness how is your DS now? Hope you were able to see someone, and your mind has been put at rest.

Poppy709 · 11/10/2021 15:52

Hi OP, hope you managed to get seen today. Personally any concerns about breathing I would just take straight to a and e if you’re worried tonight. I’m sure you’ll have been told this today but rapid breathing (more than 60 breaths a minute) means they need to be seen urgently, also watch for sucking in at ribs and chest. Hope your DS is better soon it’s awful when they’re ill cx

Poppy709 · 11/10/2021 15:52

Also just in case you didn’t know ibuprofen is much better for bringing temp down than calpol, I didn’t know that until my DS was in hospital xx

Hi we've been seen. Poor mite has bronchiolitis Sad he's back home feeling very tired and very miserable but having lots of extra cuddles.
