Hey, my 1 month old is making wheezing sounds when she’s breathing and it sounds like it’s all in her nose if that makes sense? Sounds like when she’s breathing in through her nose it sounds all blocked, what do I do? I’m a bit worried and like how would she sleep tonight now? If she can’t sleep flat in the next to me cot? Thanks!

Honestly, if she's that young and wheezing she needs seeing by a Doctor. I'd ring 111 now.

In the meantime you can try slightly raising the top end of her crib, taking her into the bathroom when it's steamy (obviously keeping her well away from the hot water) and a nasal aspirator.

Is her nose blocked? Can you see bogies?

Yes to putting her in the bathroom while the shower is on and the steam will clear her out.

Raise the top of her bed a bit.

Is she actually wheezing though? If she is I'd call 111 or 999 depending on if she's sucking her chest in too.

You can use saline nasal drops from birth (available at the chemist) these helped my DS when he was full of cold. I got him to nap on the sling so he wasn’t having to lie flat. When he was very snotty he kept bringing back up his feeds. It did clear after a couple of days. I co-slept as he wanted to be snuggled next to me. If you’re unsure and he’s actually wheezing rather than just snotty then definitely ring 111.

Definitely get a GP check just to be safe and peace of mind.

I sympathise as my DD had covid at 3/4 months and currently has a month long blocked nose and flu/cold (seen the docs 3 times this week for it as she's been up and down with fever).

Only things I've found to help:

  • raising bed at the head end, especially good at your DCs age as non mobile so will mainly stay put
  • calpol plug in but I know theyre for over 2 months unfortunately
  • baby vicks on feet and back
  • steamy room
  • short frequent feeds
  • saline was okay for us too, although I got told by one of the 3 GPS I saw that it can dry out passages with overuse (but also told to use loads by another GP Confused)

@girlmom21 makes a very good point. If she's sucking in her chest definitely phone 999.

Sorry vapour plugs are 3 months plus not 2
!

Also yes if sucking chest, or laboured breathing then 999 x

How are you getting on now @fedup247?

fedup247 · 09/10/2021 15:27

Hi everyone I rang 111 last night was told an out of hours gp would ring me but they didn’t get back to me so rang again this morning and was advised to go to a&e, went to a&e dr said it’s just a cold as everything else seems totally normal like her obs and stuff, I’ve got drops for her nose and been told to keep an eye on her so joke now, just worried about her having such a blocked nose at only 4 weeks old, feel awful that shes picked something up so soon 😩

feel awful that shes picked something up so soon. It does happen so don't blame yourself.

If she gets any worse I'd call 111 again or go back to A&E though Thanks

I had an autumn baby who seemed to pick up everything going and best thing for helping sleep was a humidifier. You can get a basic one quite cheaply on Amazon. Just put water in it - not oils or Vicks or anything - and plug in near where she sleeps.
