Finger food for babies?!

My 6 month old has been eating fruit and veg purées for about 6 weeks but I’ve been told I should start thinking about finger foods. Apart from steaming the veg and mashing where I can (banana, avo) does anyone have any other suggestions? I’ve been told to hold off in rice and pasta till 7/8 months and bread till 10 so am unsure what’s next.

Who told you not to give those things? From 6 months they can have pretty much anything(no honey under 1). Mine all had toast fingers, cucumber, fingers of melon, mango, grated cheese, pasta etc

Lots of ideas here for 6 month olds www.nhs.uk/start4life/weaning/recipes-and-meal-ideas/

Eh?
Bread and pasta and rice are fine from 6 months
One of my dc's first finger foods was toast fingers with butter

It's best to introduce wheat/gluten at this stage rather than later so bread, pasta, etc should be given now

Fusili pasta is a perfect finger food for a 6 month old. Easy to grip and holds the sauce well.

I'd highly recommend the Gill Rapley book for sound advice on introducing solids.

Baby breadsticks.
No idea how DD used to eat them with no teeth but she loved them.Grin

Strips of omelette, slices of avocado, grated cheese.

White fish and salmon, boiled egg

The Solid Starts app has a library of all foods and how to serve them to babies according to their age - incredibly helpful.

My DD from 6 months has loved savoury muffins and mini quiches! They are really easy to make yourself. I had a quick google and found lots of recipes, she still loves them now at nearly 10
months

Who told you to hold off on those things? At 6 months she can eat anything you eat (minus the obvious added salt, honey, shellfish etc). Unless you’ve had specific advice from a dietician about her because of allergies or illness, you can give her anything (toast strips, penne or fusilli pasta, fingers of avocado, omelette strips, chunks of sweet potato, veggie fritters etc).

By 7/8 months my son was eating pasta, stews, curries, sandwiches, eggs on toast etc.

It’s also worth remembering that current advice re allergies is to introduce common allergens early and regularly. So from now she should have eggs, milk (in food, not as a drink), peanut butter, sesame seeds etc.

If allergies run in your family, speak to your GP or HV first. But otherwise she should have regular exposure to those things from now on.

Thanks all. I was following the tizzie hall advice but I did introduce some allergens (butter, cheese, peanut butter) early based on the health advice.

Will crack on with the other foods and not worry. Appreciate all the advice.

On the basis she doesn't appear to have any formal qualifications I'd take her advice with a big pinch of salt tbh Smile
