Anyone any experiences of 18 months old very sociable happy loving toddler loves giving hugs and kisses some understanding - (No, to come, bedtime, knows rhymes) but babbles only no words at all also no gestures no clapping pointing or waving but during rhymes with clap my hands together. Good with taking turns with toys. No big tantrums. Eye contact fine Suspected ASD due to lack of gestures mainly! Will he ever speak if he doesnt point or have words at 18m ? I know nobody can answer that but if anyome had similar experiences i would love to know how your childs doing now PLEASE!

My dd is 14m, no gestures, she brings me things, don't know if that counts really. Some babble but that was late and is limited. She had severe reflux until 11 months, not sure if that has effected her or if we are looking at asd.

Apparently my younger sister didn't utter a word until she was 2 and a half then suddenly spoke in sentences.

I still argue with my mother that it was just a coincidence that it happened the day I started school and so wasn't there to talk for her... 😂

Happybunny2 · 15/01/2022 15:19

I can reason with myself about the speech delay because so many kids don't speak until later but gestures seem to be such an important indicator. She just looks at me like I am a mad woman when I clap wave and point. I never stop waving at teddy's,dolls, cats!!!

Mummytofour2021 · 15/01/2022 18:07

@Happybunny2 we are still very much in the same position (corrected age is 21 months) although the twins have come on in some ways. T2 is now clapping and T1 will say brum brum when hes in the mood. Lots of babbling and finally starting to imitate some things mainly play. But speech we dont have any solid words yet. I firmly believe we will eventually get an ASD diagnosis when they are older but you never know. Still no pointing or waving although some improvement on following a point and they use index finger well to press buttons etc (apparentely this is a good sign so i am told) How is your LOs understanding?

Happybunny2 · 15/01/2022 18:34

Oh really, didn't know that about pressing buttons, my lo does that alot with index finger. You seem to have alot of positives there. She plays peek a boo behind the curtain, thinks its funny. She knows what her ball and Teddy are and will look for them when I ask. She notices when we leave looks up the stairs to find us.she also welcomes me back from work. Comes in the room most of the time when I call her. I don't know really, I'm getting a bit obsessed with the whole thing.

Happybunny2 · 15/01/2022 18:36

Oh and she constantly brings things to me, sometimes when I say tata she will bring something over and hand it to me.

Tipsylizard · 17/01/2022 21:35

There is an old expression that I think holds true as a rule - walk by one, talk by two

Happybunny2 · 17/01/2022 22:23

Yes, i have heard that one. I have decided today to stop worrying and googling like crazy. Its not healthy. From now on i am just going to enjoy her and live in the moment.

Hi, just wanted to ask how your little ones are now and whether they were pointing and gesturing? My 19 month old is not talking, pointing or gesturing and im really worried. Any advice or help would be kindly appreciated.

@Roblox19 how is your little one doing now?

Cluelessmum5 · 08/08/2022 10:00

@Roblox19 hi, just wondering how you are getting on? X

Geneticsbunny · 08/08/2022 10:53

Very unlikely to be the same thing but my son was just like yours, no speech and no hand gestures but loads of smiles and eye contact. He was diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis at 3 months old. He still has difficulties with his hands and can't write aged 13 but can talk perfectly and although he has some difficulties and is at a special needs school is a wonderful sociable young man.

HeyDuggeesFavouriteSquirrel · 08/08/2022 11:38

My son was a bit like this. He started pointing a bit at 16 months but it was only occasionally. Started pointing loads at two years old, first words around 2.2 and speech really kicked in at 2.5. Now he's 3 and points and gestures all the time, speech is average for a 3 years old.

I read about this lots on and I'd say start looking into speech therapy when he's 2 but you don't need to worry hugely until 2.5.

Cluelessmum5 · 08/08/2022 12:51

@HeyDuggeesFavouriteSquirrel that's reassuring, thanks for feeding back. Presumably you had no other concerns, receptive language and eye contact good, etc? Pointing thing is weird isn't it, I remember mentioning it to my GP along with waving and clapping and she said "are those milestones now??"

HeyDuggeesFavouriteSquirrel · 08/08/2022 12:57

I did have other concerns, particularly with receptive language. He was late with this is well but it's just fine now. He's still behind my friends' kids but I've come to realise they are quite advanced whereas he's average speech wise. He's advanced in other areas though so I guess its swings and roundabouts.

Yeah! The GP's and speech therapists both say different. Some people say pointing is learned some say it's innate.

Cffee · 08/08/2022 13:02

My boy was the same, no speech and no gestures at that age. He did start taking almost overnight at about 3.
hes 9 now and never stops taking.
he is autistic and so has some struggles with communication

User48751490 · 08/08/2022 13:06

Responding to your thread OP because I was you once upon a time not that long ago worrying myself sick....

My youngest was 2yo before he started to say simple words, not even sentences.... now he is almost 5yo and talking constantly. The speech just accelerated at an incredible rate. He has had loads of speech and language input since he was 2yo. Only just recently discharged from the service two months ago.

Keep thinking positive (easier said than done, I know!). Your wee one will get there, still loads of time at 18mo.

User48751490 · 08/08/2022 13:13

DS started nursery at 3yo and his speech just took off after few months later really as he was surrounded by other children who were able talkers. He picked it up from them.

Cluelessmum5 · 08/08/2022 13:50

@HeyDuggeesFavouriteSquirrel thanks, did you end up seeking SLT input? Such a minefield this isn't it, wish I had a crystal ball!! X

HeyDuggeesFavouriteSquirrel · 08/08/2022 13:52

Yes, he's had private SLT since he was two, I think this and starting nursery helped.

Cluelessmum5 · 08/08/2022 14:28

@HeyDuggeesFavouriteSquirrel do you mind if I ask, did the SLT diagnose your little one with a specific disorder? I've tried approaching my HV but to no avail so looking private now & also trying to get into nursery asap, wait lists are ridiculous round here. (I'm so sorry this is my last question, I promise. I've totally hijacked this thread x)

HeyDuggeesFavouriteSquirrel · 08/08/2022 15:37

Hey! No he doesn't have any disorder, he was just a late bloomer. I took him to the paedritrician and health visitor who both agreed! Feel free to message me privately too!
