Would you insist GP saw baby?

My 8 month old son has had explosive diarrhea now since Saturday.

I spoke to the GP yesterday who said so long as he's drinking milk to see how he is by Monday.

It is ridiculous, i can't even put him in clothes because he is just erupting every half hour and I couldn't keep up with the clothes getting covered in it every time so he's now just kept in a nappy only.

It's just liquid and his bum is so sore.

He is sleepier than usual and doesn't want food but will have milk whenever it's given to him, he has not once turned it away and he has no temperature so the GP doesn't seem concerned (they spoke to me on the phone, they didn't see him).

I just don't feel right leaving him until Monday like this, its not getting better.

I'm sat here this morning crying which sounds ridiculous but neither of us have slept great as its happening all through the night as well. I don't know what to do.

I'm thinking of calling back and insisting they see him? I don't know what they'll do but they said they'd see him Monday if not better so there must be something?!

Help Sad

Obviously you’re his mom so you know best, if you’re worried then insist.
But saying that my 8 month old was exactly like that last week, was pooing explosively, completely off food but still ok with milk and was napping on me on top of his normal naps. Then his top teeth erupted and he’s been fine since, is he teething? I’ve heard there’s a link but doctors don’t suggest it apparently.
If he is we did baby nurofen when we twigged and he was eating again the next day.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/10/2021 09:25

Call 111, see what they suggest. I’d want him looked at, too.

Ozanj · 07/10/2021 09:25

I wouldn’t bother with the GP, just take him to children’s A&E.

Its normally policy for GP's to see little ones same day so I find this shocking! I would give 111 a call as they will prob get an appointment for you! Monday seems a long way away to me!

SNKB14 · 07/10/2021 09:28

Was he constipated prior to the diarrhoea? It could be “overflow” if it’s pure liquid and therefore still be constipated

WorriedGiraffe · 07/10/2021 09:30

Absolutely insist, it’s probably nothing to worry about but that’s really not the point. If you want an in person GP appointment you should be able to get one, especially for a baby, so I’d absolutely phone back and insist or phone 111 if you don’t feel you can as they may be able to help.

I don't think it's teething, his bottom two teeth came through about 3 weeks ago and he's not having any of the same symptoms he did then.

He did have a mild cough last week which we all had (not Covid, we all tested) where he seemed very sleepy and quiet. The cough has gone but this diarrhea has appeared and just will not shift.

He is quieter than normal still and napping more but when he is awake he doesn't seem unhappy if that makes sense, just quieter.

I just don't know if I'm over reacting, he's my PFB and I've already spoken to a doctor. Just every time it happens (and it literally is every half hour pretty much!) I'm thinking this doesn't feel right. It's like the milk/water he's having is just going through him immediately.

This is my feeling, Monday just seems to far away like this. If it was starting to gradually get better yes but it's not.

Don't bother with GP again. Call 111, who will make an appointment for you, usually at children's a&e. They tend to be very cautious with babies and you are unlikely to need to wait long as there will be a separate bit for children.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 07/10/2021 09:34

I would go to A and E with him if you feel he isn't right. I think it is appalling that your GP hasn't offered him an appointment. Poor Baby!

girlmom21 · 07/10/2021 09:35

There's not much the doctor can do. The only thing they'll do is ask for a sample to send off if you do insist on baby being seen.

As long as they're not dehydrated A&E won't do anything either.

Hogwarts4Christmas · 07/10/2021 09:38

Poor little mite. Sounds tough. I'd take him to a walk in centre or something. Mine had norovirus at that age and went from 'ok' to almost dying from severe dehydration really quickly, despite still feeding/ drinking, as they couldn't even keep water in/ down by that point.

GoodGrief100 · 07/10/2021 09:38

If you're worried then insist he is seen. If it helps I was the same with my DD around the same age and I was worried about dehydration. The doctor looked to see if her mouth was dry, if she had tears when crying and also if the soft spots on her head were sunken. None of the above so he said as long as she's drinking milk and staying hydrated with plenty of wet nappies (hard to tell I know!), absolutely nothing to worry about and had to ride it out. It didn't take long for her to get back to normal.

spurs4ever · 07/10/2021 09:42

Do not wait. The GP should absolutely be seeing young babies in person but if that doesn't work then try 111 or if you can get to an Urgent Care Centre then go there. If this has now been 5 days then don't leave it any longer x

makinganavalon · 07/10/2021 09:55

If you have an instinct get that baby seen. It's probably fine and will put your mind at ease xx

AliceW89 · 07/10/2021 10:01

If you are worried, then get the baby seen. Either via 111 or directly in the hospital/clinic.

No doctor is going to be able to stop the diarrhoea though. That needs to happen in its own time. Assessment will be to ensure your DC is clinically ‘well’ and hydrated enough. It’s completely reasonable to be seen to ensure that though.

3luckystars · 07/10/2021 10:05

He is very small to wait that long. I would have him seen by a doctor definitely. However you will manage that I don’t know, but good luck x

chocopuffs · 07/10/2021 10:06

OP my 10 month old has had something similar recently. She's also had a cough and now she's had diarrhoea for about a week now. It's not as severe as your DS's by the sound of it but none of her nappies have been normal and some are quite explosive. She's also off her food but still having milk feeds. My GP also don't seem very interested as she doesn't have a temperature and she's still feeding. It's so tough. I wonder if something is going around. In the meantime I'm just trying to keep her hydrated and hope it clears up soon.
