100% Natural reusable nappies?

Mama9685 · 03/10/2021 16:33

I have spent hours on end searching the internet for a 100% natural reusable nappy for my baby, however, I cannot seem to find one that doesn't contain some sort of polyester or microfibre. I am against using synthetic materials so I need something that is only made up of natural fibres (However I do understand that the outer waterproof layer has to be synthetic Sad ). I was wondering if there is anyone out there that knows of a brand I could use that is actually absorbant and that will fit from birth to potty?

Thank you!!

Have a look at disana tie on nappies and wool wraps. There are also some 100 per cent cotton terry nappies out there.

You Used to be able to get organic cotton or bamboo little lambs not sure if you still can

None are truly birth to potty. The btp nappies tend to fit from about 2 months to 2 years depending on the brand. You can get bamboo/cotton inners from companies like little lamb, tots bots etc and then wool wraps (I think petit lulu do them) or I know people have knitted their own (beyond my skill level).

It depends how far you want to go with ‘all natural’. These are shaped terry cotton, with a fleece layer on the inside. But any nappy that isn’t a flat terry square are going to have synthetic material in the elastic round the legs, as the ones I’ve linked do. And as you say even a flat terry square will need a PUL wrap. I’m obviously not sure of your reasons, but for me this would pail in comparison to a disposable nappy, which are 100% ‘un-natural’.

How about bamboo Terry cloths? We used these and they worked very well. You have to get used to the folding but it doesn’t take long.

You can get away with just a couple of wraps to minimise the synthetic aspect. You could even try not using an outer at all and just being very on top of changing before the wet reaches the outer layer of the wrap, but not sure if that would work since they are moisture wicking. But a scad of terries and 3 wraps (we used motherease airflow) is probably the best (and cheapest) way to do it.

MadamMedea · 03/10/2021 17:54

Terries also fit birth to potty because it’s up to you how you fold them to make them fit. The nappy lady website has really helpful instructional videos on how to fold Terry squares. You can also use muslins on newborns to minimise the bulk.

Just realised my suggestion is no good as fleece is probably not going to work for you! Apologies

welshweasel · 03/10/2021 17:56

I would just buy second hand reusables. They’re already produced and done at least one child, you are in essence saving them from landfill!

Caspianberg · 03/10/2021 17:57

We use tots bots. They are bamboo and cotton. The outside wrap isn’t. With use the easyfits daytime, and bamboozles at night

AliceW89 · 03/10/2021 18:03

Alongside the PUL, the absorbent part of Tots bots nappies contain a microfibre core, in the middle of the cotton or bamboo.

I’d go hemp booster with Diasana tie on nappy and wool shorties. For a newborn probably a cotton square/Muslim and wool shorties. Avoid diasana silk or cotton squares. Very rough and impossible to wash in my experience!

Whatamuddleduck · 03/10/2021 18:42

Wool shorties wise, I can’t knit so used diasana shorties which worked really well. There are some great wool nappy/shortie/longie groups on Facebook.

It sounds like wool wouldn’t work but as long as you lanolise well it really does and then you have less washing, so more environmentally friendly.
