Ladies I just wanted to give some hope with those of you with late walkers. My little guy was a bum shuffler who took his first unaided steps 1 week shy of 23 months then he really didn’t do much more until these past 2 weeks and today at 24 and a half months he is officially walking. I found this waiting really tough as I didn’t know anybody else who had a child walk this late so I just wanted to let the worried parents with the late walkers know that they will get there. Stay strong Mama Xx

Ah, great for him! It's hard going isn't it. Mine was 22.5 months. At 3.5 years now, you wouldn't know it.

QuiltedHippo · 02/10/2021 21:42

Well done to your little one!

mibbelucieachwell · 02/10/2021 21:43

That's lovely.

I didn't walk until I was 22 months old apparently. I was average at PE. Average height. Perhaps your little boy has a cautious approach like me.

This fills me with so much hope!! My DD is 18 months, she scales furniture but prefers to bum shuffle to get about. She will walk with us holding both hands but she hasn't quite got the balance to go unaided yet. Well done to your little man! X

Thank ladies. It’s such a worry he is a late talker too so it’s good to get 1 thing ticked off the list. @Eileen101 that’s good to know. @mibbelucieachwell he is very cautious but also slightly lazy lol.

@MyGrassIsBrowner hang in there it’s so hard. My little guy would only walk with 2 hands then recently with one hand for a few steps before he would swing in and cling to your leg or drop to his bottom. We saw a physio at 18months she told us bum shufflers don’t use there core muscles enough so they need to strengthen that first so they can stand unaided and then walk. We bought him a sand /water table which we filled with toys instead and he would spend a lot of time standing around this playing with his toys I think this helped to strengthen his core muscles. Best of luck feel free to pm me if you have any questions!xx

Aww amazing! I worked in a baby unit and had some walk at 9 months, some at two. When I would visit the kids in the toddler room a year later you couldn’t tell which ones were which! Soon you’ll be wishing he would sit down again 😂

Kanaloa · 02/10/2021 22:14

Now I think of it lots of the late walkers I knew were shufflers. I always just presumed it was because shuffling is comfortable whereas crawling you need to keep looking up/can’t move around as easily. Core strength makes more sense though!

careerchangeperhaps · 02/10/2021 22:35

Ah. My DNiece was a very late walker too. She was 2.5 years old, had never crawled, only bum-shuffled a little and then suddenly got up and walked across the room. It happens.

@FinnsMammy That's really good advice actually! I've got her a play kitchen for christmas with lots of faux food and whatnot so I'm hoping that will entice her to stand for long periods. It's such a worry and the HV got us even more worried by saying she was concerned about her legs, even though there is absolutely nothing wrong with them, she's just a lazy little buggar! 🙈

I'm pregnant with DD2 at the moment and it's been an awful pregnancy, so I haven't been able to get up and walking with her which has been so frustrating. I've got hope that she'll be off soon! 😊 xx

Leafblower14 · 03/10/2021 07:32

My son walked incredibly late, 26 months, like pp said, you wouldn't know it at 3.5 years!

jennyt82 · 03/10/2021 07:47

My youngest walked much later than his older siblings but I was really worried because he absolutely refused to put any weight on his legs no matter what I tried. He then went from pulling up at the sofa to walking to running within the space of 3 weeks!

FinnsMammy · 03/10/2021 14:35

@MyGrassIsBrowner best of luck the kitchen is a great idea. I’m also pregnant with my second baby and was getting tired of carrying him around lol. Our HV told us he should of been walking by his 1st bday 🙈the physio was great I think with my son he hated Tummy time which I think contributed to the bum shuffling so this baby we will have to see maybe he/she will be another bum shuffler ! 😂🙈 @Leafblower14 that’s good to know thank you he is practically running already 🥰

@FinnsMammy strangely my DD sbsolutely HATED tummy time too.. would scream the house down as soon as we put her belly down on the playmat! Hopefully the play kitchen goes down well hehe! X

FinnsMammy · 03/10/2021 20:47

@MyGrassIsBrowner yup same thing he would scream the house down it wasn’t worth it I read it was important for their core muscles at that time but I also read it was psychologically damaging if they really hated it to put them through it so I couldn’t then he learnt to roll and that was that.... lol anyway he is walking now and your little girl will be on her feet soon too xx

@FinnsMammy My HV didnt help my anxiety tbh and she used to wang on about tummy time to me a lot, so I would put her on tummy often and stress myself out as she'd be distressed as hell too. She also rolled totally on her own and then started crawling. She's got her own mind though and likes to do things on her own terms! I honestly dont think she's far off being able to walk unaided for sure! 😊 xx
