When did your baby start saying “mama” “baba”

My baby is 8 months and health visitor said he’s hasn’t met this milestone. I thought 8 months was early to start saying “mama” “baba”.

Do you mean saying as in babbling these sounds or actually using them as proper words? 8 months would be incredibly early to be speaking properly! Babbling I’m not sure when my DS started babbling those sounds but I wouldn’t worry!

StarTastic · 02/10/2021 21:20

I think mine were around 9 or 10 months when they first said mama then baba then dada.

I don't think you have any reason to worry

Heruka · 02/10/2021 21:21

It’s hard to remember exactly, which is an indicator of how unimportant this specific milestone is! But I know my first said dada long before mama.

Around 14 months. I was nervous about that because I read that "most" babies can say "mama" and "dada" by 12 months. DD is now 18 months and has picked up loads of words since then, so all is well.

whateverintheworld · 02/10/2021 21:29

My DD is 8.5 months and babbling “dada” but not “mama” yet. It started a couple of weeks ago very suddenly

Vicky1989x · 02/10/2021 21:38

My DD didn’t start babbling until just after her first birthday. Started with baba, then dada and then mama. At 8 months she would just screech Grin

bathorshower · 02/10/2021 21:49

About 16 months for dada, 22 for mama (I felt really loved....). It wasn't mentioned at her one year check, and by the time she was 3 her speech was deemed advanced, so I really wouldn't worry at this point!

Foreverbaffled · 02/10/2021 22:01

Babbling mama dada etc with no meaning behind it is not considered delayed until after 10 months. Saying mama and dada to mean an actual parent is much more of a 12 month milestone at least.

BookFiend4Life · 03/10/2021 17:58

My little is about 7.5mos and has just started really babbling and being more vocal the last two weeks or so. She was pretty quite up till then, though she has been roaring for a long time (when she likes her dinner) and enjoyed making clicking sounds with her tongue and occasional screeches. The last week she has been doing a lot of "mamamamama" and "baba" and a lot of random vowel sounds in a sort of talking way. No signs of "dada" yet. We try to make any sounds she makes right back at her.

Hope54321 · 03/10/2021 20:12

My HV was surprised my LO is not copying sounds that we make, should I worry because I don’t actually feel lile I should.

My LO is vocal though otherwise. Not really babbling, but making “ah” “fff” “gah” kinda sounds.

There is a wide variety among babies when it comes to milestones, and most of them will be developing just fine. My previous experience with HVs and milestone checks was the they seemed to have very little training in what can be considered normal, and even a brief look on the NHS website told me a lot more about developmental stages and whether to worry or not. All they did was fill in a standardised form, calculate the 'points' scored and read me the text accompanying the score.

As an example DC1 wasn't walking yet at her 12 month appointment (which is completely within the normal range, and there were no other worrying signs such as low muscle tone) and she said DD scored low im gross motor skills and whether we wanted her seen by a pediatrician. I declined and as expected DD started walking a few month later.

I hope your HV is better educated than mine were, but I'd definitely recommend reading up on things yourself (using a trustworthy source of medical information)

YRGAM · 03/10/2021 20:31

Nothing to worry about, that's really early. Ours didn't really start saying it until about 14 months

Yourstupidityexhaustsme · 03/10/2021 20:33

About 11 months for dada but about 14 months for mama.

I was devastated and thought he didn’t like me 😂 they say dada first ‘usually’ because it’s an easier sound to form.

Pinkchocolate · 03/10/2021 20:38

Children do things at such different speeds.
DD said it at 12 months and seemed to know it meant me, DD babbled it (and various other sounds) at 8 months but didn’t start talking with meaning until he was 3. We were referred to Speech and Language therapy but before the appointment he started talking properly and hasn’t stopped since.
I wouldn’t be worried in your position, your baby will babble soon enough.

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 03/10/2021 20:39

About 1o months

kowari · 03/10/2021 20:42

DS never babbled. He had five words at 18 months, started putting words together around his second birthday. He understood everything, just not in any rush to talk.

ElephantandGrasshopper · 03/10/2021 20:47

My dd didn't really babble at all as a baby. A health visitor told me that it wasn't normal
not to babble and I was really worried for a while. However dd went straight into saying proper words at 1, at 3 I was told her speech was advanced, and now she is 8 she talks exactly like any other 8 year old Grin. Dc2 babbled a LOT and now also has totally normal speech for his age. So I don't think that it makes any difference in the long term.

My daughter is 7.5 months and started saying mama about a month ago. She said dada before this

It doesn't sound abnormal to me

Mumof3bb1 · 03/07/2024 09:44

Hi, how’s your little one now?

Mumof3bb1 · 20/07/2024 06:57

Hi @Hope54321 how is your little one now?

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 20/07/2024 11:11

DD2 is 8 months tomorrow. This week she is clearly babbling mamma. She seems to be saying it with purpose as she is doing it only when I am around but who knows. She's also started the B sound but it just sounds like BBB at the moment.

DD1 was early with this, babbled Mamma just before 6 months and Dadda around 7 months.

I didn't think the were bothered about this until 12 months x

Mumof3bb1 · 20/07/2024 12:18

@Tryingtoconceivenumber2 my DS has just turned ten months and we’ve not had any babbling mama/baba/dada had a few aboooos but nothing else, starting to get worried!

Yas1362 · 04/10/2025 18:26

@Hope54321 hi. How is your child doing now? May I ask when did he start babbling?
