Panicking after trauma

Briefly, my now 3yo dd got sepsis and was very ill when she was 6 months. My dad then contracted sepsis 6 months later after contracting an infection. My mum was diagnosed with leukaemia last year following a routine blood test and died 10 months later. Her mum (my nana) died from the same leukaemia in 2012.

I've always been quite an anxious person but as a result of the above every time dd gets ill I can't cope and think she's going to die / has sepsis / has meningitis. I try not to let her know how frightened I am but I take her temperature loads and constantly fuss her so she must be somewhat aware.

Today she came home from nursery a bit grumpy and fussy. I took her temp and it was 38.8 and she said her throat and 'breath' hurt. She ate her tea but later said her throat hurt too much to drink her milk. She's woken up a few times a bit delirious and her temp is creeping back up. Dh is sleeping with her as we also have a 12 week old baby so I'm with her.

Logically I think this is probable tonsillitis but my mind is running wild and my blood is running cold. I suppose I'm looking for you lovely lot to talk some sense into me!

Ps I started on citalopram a week ago for anxiety, depression and ptsd and I'm seeing a perinatal mental health team in a fortnight so I have already sought medical help.

Oh you poor thing. Yes, it sounds like you have been badly affected by these events and no wonder.

I have also suffered from anxiety myself so I understand how you are feeling.

As regards your DD, you are doing all the right things, and it does sound like tonsillitis. Keep up the calpol and try to get as much fluid in as you can.

Oh lovely, sending you a huge hug. I lost my first baby to stillbirth and am similarly terrified when my subsequent baby is ill, that feeling of my blood running cold is exactly it. I’m really glad you’re getting support, I have been treated for PTSD and although it doesn’t remove the fear entirely, it is much more manageable now. Hope you have managed to get some sleep and your DD is feeling better soon. Xx
