Car seat

I am writing in this part of mums net to gain advice on car seats. I'm pregnant and looking for a car seat for my baby.
I'm unsure what to do.
The pram I want you can buy with a car seat however it's up to 6 months/1 year and doesn't have isofix base so would just use the seat belt fitting.
I've looked at car seats separately and you can buy isofix ones from birth-4 years but these seats don't seem to be able to lift in and out. They look more like they stay in the car and wouldn't attach to a pram.
So my question is (from your experience) would you -
A- just buy full travel system with car seat and invest in an isofix car seat when the baby is 1 year (or outgrown the other one)
B- buy a car seat separately to begin with that will last longer and is isofix. Maybe some makes will attach to pram as well I'm not sure.

Thanks for taking the time to read!

The bigger ones that are from birth - 4 years stay in the car.

We got the Joie iSize iLevel it was around £200. It came with the isofix base and also laid back which was an important factor for me. It's better for their airways. It also clipped onto my mothercare pram. I'm sure you're aware but when they're young they shouldn't be in the car seat for long. But it was handy as DS got older to clip the car seat on the frame then into the shops quickly. The only thing with this car seat is you cannot use a seatbelt. It has to be the isofix base. He went in this one until about 14 months.

We've now got the Joie 360 spin and that's from birth but I wouldn't use that one from birth personally. These are the sort of ones that stay in the car.

I would choose a different pram if that's the only car seat which will attach onto it!

Honestly, it depends how much you will use your car. I have to use the car a lot and I like things to be as convenient and simple as possible so for me that means:

  • car seat has a separate base so I can carry DC to the car and then click the seat onto the base without car seat belt faff. I've done that on holiday and it's fine and safe but it's a hassle and would do my head in if I had to do it regularly when there's such a simple alternative
  • definitely have a car seat which attaches to the wheels of a transport system pram. You'll find tons of thread of here with with pros and cons but for me it's been amazing. If DC is asleep or I just need to nip into a shop briefly it takes seconds to get the car seat off it's base and onto the pram. Much easier than taking her out of the seat and into the pram

Of course those infant carriers only last until about a year but i think very much worth it.

Do you mind sharing which pram and car seat you like? Many have bases or will go on prams with Maxi Cosi adapters so might be worth double checking?

It really depends on your lifestyle? With DD she was happy in the seat so having one that when in and out of car and clipped into pram was invaluable but with my twins they don't like being in the car seats when not in the car so they do stay in the car permanently

I find having isofix much more reassuring and less faff than using the seatbelt

Thanks so much for your advice. The pram I'm looking at is venicci tinum. You can buy an isofix base as an extra with the travel system but it's quite a lot extra like £160 I think. I'm not sure if you can attach other brand car seats onto the pushchair ? I'm sure you probably can but would need to research that. So I'm thinking isofix is the way to go- judging by some responses. So probably buy a separate car seat and base.

I have just read that you can attach other car seats onto this pram you just need the adapters which are £26. So could buy those and a separate car seat with isofix base. Or just get the seat that comes with the pram and put up with using the seat belt fixture for a while. It's a tough decision as need to think about cost too.

I had a car seat that lifted out of the base and went onto the buggy frame with adaptors. Across two babies I did it once ever. Seat only left the car on the very rare occasions we were using a relative's car.

There was never any occasion where using the actual pram or a sling wasn't a better option than using the car seat as a buggy. The only time it was useful was when I had to go to the Dentist who was on the 2nd floor with not lift so I couldn't take the pram up but needed somewhere DS could sit while I was in the chair.

I would get the longer lasting isofix seat and not worry about it going on the pram chassis.
