My toddler cry's every time he has to do a poo

My 20 months old son cry's every time he has to poo, it started when we started fresh milk when he turned 1, long story short we have been given a range of medications to try and fibre drinks but nothing is helping. I have tried everything food wise and all natural remedies, we have an appointment in October after much struggle with a dietitian, it took us a whole year to get this appointment!

I was wondering if there was any other parents out there who's children have had or have the same problem and maybe you can shed some light on this, all advice will be appreciated.

Is he still drinking cows milk?

Salina2 · 26/09/2021 20:50

@girlmom21 yes he is as the doctors advices to continue it but I have decreased the amount and diluted with water

What type of bread does he have?
My little boy who is 3 and a half was the same, crying whenever doing a poo and struggling alot. I switched from white to wholemeal or best of both, which helped enormously.

My 16 month old DD is exactly the same - she’s on movicol which helps but not all the time. It’s horrible to see them in pain isn’t it Sad

TwinMum89 · 26/09/2021 20:58

My twin boy is 26 months and he is the same. I don’t think he is constipated and I don’t think it is anything he eats. I don’t know for sure but we suspect that he doesn’t like the feeling of going to the toilet. He doesn’t go for around 3 days at a time which we think is down to him withholding.

BrushMySmush · 26/09/2021 21:01

My daughter was similar and suffered repetitive impacted stools, we were prescribed laxative powders and it eventually sorted it out and we’ve not had another occurrence and it’s been about a year now. Has this been ruled out? Some poop still comes through so it’s hard to figure out sometimes.

Ty36 · 26/09/2021 21:12

My son had the same problem from around that age, it got so bad we ended up taking him to the hospital one evening as he was screaming so much in pain. They gave him some Laxido sachets to take each day, then we gradually reduced them to just one a day which he still has now to keep him regular (he’s 4 now) I believe it was made worse with cows milk but since having the maintenance 1 a day sachet he hasn’t had any problems since even with milk. He got to the point initially he was too scared to try to poop so he was holding it in.

howdidigettobe50something · 26/09/2021 21:30

This happened to one of my daughter's after she was weaned. It went on for a very long time with doctors prescribing increasingly higher doses of laxatives and softeners. I decided in the end to seek help through a kinesiologist to look at food intolerances and it was the best thing we ever did. We excluded those foods and stopped all medication at the same time and it was like switching on a tap. Totally sorted the issue and I only wish we'd do done it sooner.

bathorshower · 26/09/2021 21:35

DD got really bad constipation (bleeding each time she went) when we switched to cows milk at 1. We switched to toddler formula, and it went away. I realise you are following your doctor's advice, and I am not a medical doctor, but I thought I'd share our experience.

MilduraS · 26/09/2021 22:14

I used to look after a 2yo boy who had the same problem. He drank a bottle of prune juice diluted 50:50 with water every day and it helped a lot. I tried some and it was actually pretty tasty.

Salina2 · 27/09/2021 22:02

Thank you for everyone for sharing your experiences and advice. I am currently giving him lactulose and movicol which he hates! I don't feel like it helps much and I hate seeing him struggle to go.

I will take on board some of the advice and see if it helps.

He has an app at the hospital in October so I will mention all this to them.

@Galaxygirl93 he doesn't eat much bread, he has weetqbix with a prune purée in the morning, he does eat other things like rice etc which I will change to whole meal for him.

@Vicky1989x it's so horrible seeing them in so much pain just to poo, what is your little one taking? Have you managed to find something that helps

OP posts:
Salina2 · 27/09/2021 22:09

@TwinMum89 oh really, yes soemtiems it's a fear of going, it's difficult to know what to do sometimes

Salina2 · 27/09/2021 22:11

@BrushMySmush what is repetitive impacted stools? What did you give your daughter to help?

OP posts:
Salina2 · 27/09/2021 22:13

@Ty36 aww that sounds horrible, I hope he is ok now? How many sachets of laxido did you give him a a day? My son hates them and I have to force him to take it which isn't nice, I mix it in with juices and even then he knows what it is

Did you reduce the amount of cows milk you gave him?

OP posts:
Salina2 · 27/09/2021 22:14

@howdidigettobe50something that is really good to know, so happy it helped, it is defo something I will look into, I do think he must have some intolerances to certain foods. What else would you recommend doing that you found helped?

OP posts:
Salina2 · 27/09/2021 22:16

@bathorshower oh that sounds
Awful, my son sometimes has a bit of bleed from pushing so much and his poo being so hard which is so so horrible and upsetting. Did you switch back to formula? Was it the one for 2-3 year olds? Thank you for your advice, I agree sometimes doctors advice you but it's not always the right way

Marmaladeagain · 27/09/2021 22:16

I assume he has been checked for fissure etc as can cause pain and not be obvious to parent but gp can check. Can lead to cycle of withholding due to pain and poos drying out etc and goes round and round in circles for quite a while.

Salina2 · 27/09/2021 22:17

@MilduraS was it the 100% pure prune juice? Is there a certain amount he should be having? Thank you

OP posts:
Salina2 · 27/09/2021 22:18

@Marmaladeagain no he hasn't been checked for that, I will have to mention that, it's been very difficult to get much help from any doctors, they just keep prescribing him laxatives and stool softeners

You’re best to google it as NHS has a good explanation but we were prescribed paediatric laxative powders 😊

Marmaladeagain · 27/09/2021 22:25

I’d definitely ask for his bottom to be checked over by gp for anything obvious like that. They could prescribe something for the bath, can’t remember what we used but helped soothe the skin.

If in a position to then I’d ask local paediatrician for advice. It’s a very common problem. But ask go to check him over properly rather than just prescribing. If not happy with gp ask to see a different one maybe.

bathorshower · 27/09/2021 22:39

Yes, we switched back to formula - as she was just 1, it was for 1-2 year olds. It cleared up the constipation within a week (and the formula contained added vitamins/minerals, so we didn't have to try to get her to take another supplement). If you do go back to formula, you do want it to be follow on milk as it contains more iron, lack of which can be an issue for toddlers.

Probablyinpain · 27/09/2021 22:44

My son had this as a baby and needed a procedure . May need another soon. He screamed every time he pooped. It was because his bowel was blocked and he needed a dialitation. Apparently its rare but it was a nightmare getting anyone to listen and took 6 months of him screaming to get him diagnosed (only through me refusing to leave the hospital with him for a week.)

He is now awaiting a follow up appointment 1.5 year later to see if it needs redoing as he is still having issues.

Unlikely to be this but it's another possibility.
