Is Calpol safe with Penicillin?

My little one has just been prescribed Penicillin for an ear infection and tonsillitis. She has a high temperature so just wondering if Calpol if safe to give to her to bring her temperature down as I forgot to ask the doctor at the time!

Also, they have prescribed 125mg/5ml four times a day. She's 11.5 months old and I read the leaflet and it said 5ml for over 1 year olds, under 1s is 2.5ml. I know it's only a matter of a couple of weeks, but just checking this is okay too. Thank you 😊

And she needs to take what she is prescribed by the doctor. Don't under dose her if that is not what you have been told to do.

It's fine to give paracetamol (Calpol) alongside penicillin.

Also, your doctor will have been aware of your baby's age when prescribing the medication. Give it in the dose prescribed. Two weeks short of a year old is nothing, and is a fairly arbitrary guide anyway. Body weight is another part of the equation. If your doctor feels that the baby is the size and weight of an average one year old then the dose for a one year old can be given.

@delilahbucket Thank you so much! I gave her the prescribed amount tonight, I just wanted it clarified, thanks again 😊

I think with the doses a lot of the time they base this on weight rather than age. I say this as someone who once was horrified when the hospital gave my dd double the dose of Calpol Blush

Yes I believe calpol is safe with penicillin. Hope she's better soon!

It’s fine they are guidelines “under 1” could mean tiny 3m old or huge will be 1 in 10 days. Common sense says the 1y will need double dose. 2.5ml will leave them still in lot of pain. Though I know there are those who stuck to the hours and days of birth approach for everything! Hope they feel better soon and you both get some sleep

@Topseyt @YouveBeenLittUp

Thank you both 😊 She's a good weight too so I'll carry on with the prescribed dose!

Feel so helpless when she can't tell me what's hurting 😞

From the BNFC. Good luck getting it down her. It's unbelievably vile tasting.

@Akire I thought so, thank you 😊 The doctors know what they are doing anyway! Thanks, I hope so too 🤞🏼

@Toddlerteaplease Thank you! Ah the pharmacist warned me how bitter it was and that I'd probably struggle giving it to her 😩 She's been refusing to drink anything so I think it will be a struggle!

Why on Earth they can't put sugar back in it, I don't know. I loved that stuff as a kid. Now we get kids in on IV antibiotics as they just won't take it.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2021 22:49

Syringe into the very back of her cheek. Slowly. It makes it more difficult to spit out.

ChickenRoseNugget · 25/09/2021 23:10

@Toddlerteaplease It would be much easier and far more efficient. It's not like they take it all the time!
Thank you for the tip. They did give me a syringe, I shall try it. Last time I tried with Calpol it ended up everywhere 😩 but I didn't try the back of the cheek!

Mix it with jam is my tip - good luck!
