Hi is 6 months. It was just a little crumb, I was letting him suck and it went down the wrong way
He is fine, breathing, smiling, mucking about but still keeps trying to cough it up, can I do anything, can't believe I was so daft!
Thanks.

Agree it's ok to have bread, DS has been having it since 6m but he does find it much easier to eat toast. Why not? (Is it because pizza sounds a bit 'junk food'?! Would bruschetta be better ?)

Thankye Aitch. Appreciate the confidence boost!

Twinkly - ignore - a bit of pizza is fine for something to suck - and if you remember the last tiem you choked - you do cough for a while afterwards. So don't worry

I know. Apparently all profiles say that.

I have 3 children and have nannied for over 10 over the years. I wouldn't have given my 6 month old pizza. I was just stating that I was shocked about it. That is all.

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 06/12/2007 10:12

Speccie, twas a good pizza lol.
Scoob it's fine, I genuinely hadn't a clue if I was doing something stupid, so no offence taken!

I did blw with DD2 and she was sucking on croissants, toast, bread sticks, rice cakes etc etc when she was 5 months!!! (Her choice, not mine!) It is ABSOLUTELY fine, he let you know when he was struggling, and he's fine. Don't be put off. He obviously enjoyed sucking on it or wouldn't have put it in his mouth, likelihood is that it just tickled his throat. I tended to give dd2 larger things, like a whole croissant, so she could suck off and deal with what she wanted to rather than giving her small bits of food, I could be wrong, but think this is the blw ;'way'.

Oh, okay.

dejags · 06/12/2007 10:26

Babys and food.

If you want to give him pizza (my DD loves pizza crusts, she's 7 months) go wild.

If you feel badly giving shop bought, it's the easiest thing in the world to make.

By 6 months they are capable of eating what we eat for the most part. Don't stress about it.

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 06/12/2007 10:31

DEJAGS! are you back? haven't seen you in aaages.

coldtits · 06/12/2007 11:16

Nothing wrong with bread for babies as long as you know they aren't going to react to the Gluten.

jetson · 06/12/2007 11:22

My parents babysit my son when he was being weaned and I got back and Dad said he woke up crying so they brought him into the kitchen and gave him a pork pie!!! Have had to give my parents very firm instructions on what they can and can't do since then.
I had a book on weaning and followed it almost by the letter as was so unsure of myself and didn't have a clue-think it was Gina Ford (!!!)

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 06/12/2007 12:21

mmmmm, pork pie...

ruddynorah · 06/12/2007 12:24

nothing wrong with pizza for a 6 month old. he'd probably do better with a whole hunk of crust though than a crumb.

Flame · 06/12/2007 12:27

DS was pretty much weaned on chip shop chips. Just give him some drinks, he'll be fine.

annoyingdevil · 06/12/2007 13:47

oooops both mine had a bit of pizza to nibble on at 6 mths - does that make me a bad mother? tbh I should imagine good quality pizza is a bit more nutritious than a rice cake and people seem happy to shove those down their 6 mth old babies

SweetSnowflake · 06/12/2007 13:49

i havent read this but can imagine all thejudgements..howver, i would say make sure he ahs lots to drink, his throat may be scratched and that may be why he keeps coughing, keep and eye, make sure there is nothing else stuck and im sure hell be fine[smlie]

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 06/12/2007 14:05

Thankyou for all your help, everyone - it wasn't hard crust, just the mushy stuff - it was soggy before it went in his mouth tbh! (I do great breakfasts, obv.)so I think he wasn't scratched. He stopped coughing after about 3 minutes which was a relief...it was only about 4 little coughs, spread out over that time. So he seems to be Ok.

I will try bruschchettA tomorrow and see what happens

The only reason I wouldn't have given my ds pizza at 6 months is that we were doing the super duper cautious allergy weaning and not giving him wheat until around 9 months (IIRC).
My advice would be to give him bigger bits that he can hold on to and suck. By the time any bits are soggy enough to have come off in his mouth, they will be all soft and mushy and shouldn't cause a problem.
Don't listen to all the about pizza on this thread.

PrisonerCellBlockAitch · 06/12/2007 16:19

yep ime toast better than bread, which goes a bit claggy adn can get a bit stuck in the roof of the mouth. agree with MB about the . you do what you like.

belgo · 06/12/2007 16:20

FA - you should try pureeing the pizza before giving it
