Asd assessment for my 8yr old girl

So we have had her paediatrician appointment and they referred her to speech and language and we had that appointment this week and I've just received her report. I was really happy with the appointment as she was very informative and kept it casual which helped my daughter stay relaxed. I just wondered if anyone has had a similar report and what you took from it? It is going back to paediatrician and they will do the final diagnoses but I wondered if anyone knew if she will be able to get the correct support at school. I've added the pictures could you please take a read and let know what you think. Thanks in advance

It all depends on the school really. Are you in contact with the school SENDCO?

Lougle · 24/09/2021 21:53

It's all very familiar - I have 2 DDs with ASD. Are they deciding whether to do the ADOS or 3Di, etc?

With DD2, at 6, the SALT basically listed all of DD2's ASD traits, then said 'but it's not affecting her so it's all ok'. She was finally diagnosed at 11.

I'm actually in the same local area as you! I have two children diagnosed as ASD. We had a similar report from SALT. The paediatrician did a BOSA assessment and the results of both led to the ASD diagnosis.

It depends on the school, but I don't think you can assume that a diagnosis will get you the support. You need to apply for an EHCP. You can do this yourself as a parent. I'm part of a Facebook group called Suffolk EHCP support group, which can guide you through the process. IPSEA is another good website which explains the EHCP process and has templates you can use.

That report is indicative of ASD in terms of the language they use and elements they point out.

Unfortunately support at school isn't determined by a diagnosis. A diagnosis will get you a "small steps" or "SEN support" plan. When you read it you might think that is all you need - it is enough for a lot of children - but it's not legally enforceable.

If your child needs more support than that, you need to apply for an EHCP. That should get you an assessment from an ed psych, an OT and SLT. If assessment is refused you can appeal. They will then say whether your child needs more than the extra support provided without an EHCP, and if you disagree you can appeal.

It took us 2 years from querying with the school whether an EHCP was necessary to actually getting a draft plan so I would apply as soon as possible.

@Ilikecheeseontoast she has just moved schools as the previous school was not doing her any good. I can request a meeting, which I have but she has only been there for 2 weeks and so far according to my daughter the teachers are great.

@lougle I'm unsure, at the assessment with the paediatrician he just explained that he would assess, S&L would assess and then they would come to a decision so really no idea.

@rrra Thank you ah I may take a look In to that as behaviours at home I have always "dealt" with as such and I know certain ways and a lot of the time I am telling the teachers what would work best and it does, but I worry the older she gets the more will be expected of her that shouldnt be if that makes sense?

@karmaViolet That is great to know, I know her previous school already had in place a "personal learning plan" which is created by the senco, explaining her needs but I'm not sure these had ever actually been put to use. The senco is aware and the old school should be sending all info over so hopefully when I meet the senco here we can discuss in more detail about what they can do for her.
