Tummy bug?

Hello everyone,
So my LO is 2.4, she was sick in nursery yesterday so I picked her up and she was definitely not herself for a little while, looked like she was gonna be sick a couple of times but never did. She then wanted food and ate tea, had bath and went to bed. She then was sick around midnight last night, but hasn't been sick since, keeps wanting to eat and drink so almost normal. Does anyone have any idea what could cause this? Is it just a tummy bug? I find it odd that she feels okay enough to eat in between being sick. I'm hoping shes not sick again, I don't deal with sick very well 😂

My 4 year old DD has this at the moment. She was sick Sunday night, sick on Monday, then absolutely fine on Tuesday - ate her breakfast, lunch and dinner and was happy and fine all day. Took her to school the next morning (yesterday) and got a call about an hour later saying she's not feeling well. When we got her home she was sick again, though later that night had some dinner. 🤷🏻‍♀️

There's definitely a tummy bug going around at the mo, I just hope that's the last of it!

@CaptainSpirit I hope she's okay now! It just doesn't make sense to me, I thought a tummy bug would be quite full on then settle down after 24-48 hours, but there's such long stretches of time in between, I just don't get it! I didn't sleep much last night cause I worried she was gonna be sick again.

I'm not a medic but it's possible to have a tummy bug like this, or she has a non specific virus, and she is being sick when her temperature goes up at night. I'm afraid it's very common for them to get lots of bugs like this when they first start nursery but it helps with their immunity later on.

How is her temperature op?

It is really worrying when your little one is ill so try and distract yourself with a calming app on You Tube and if possible have a calm day together?

I hope your DD feels better soon.

Lots of bugs going round atm!
But just wanted to say when my DS was sick it turned out to be a urine infection. He was only ever sick through the night.
It's good she's still wanting to eat etc

Thank you @Hortibunda
My sister is a childminder (not around where I live) and she said 9 of the kids were affected, including her own 2 yr old.
She's been in nursery since she was 6 months old (except a brief 3 month lockdown!) And she's picked up a lot of colds and things, but this is the first sickness bug, so it's all new to me. I feel awful saying that but she's my first child and I've never had to deal with it before, thankfully!
Her temp has been normal all along.
Yeah we're having a day at home today, just trying to keep ourselves busy, she's found new TV shows she likes too haha.

@RoseGoldGlasses how odd that a urine infection caused him to be sick. How did you find out that's what it was?

I didn't know that a UTI can cause sporadic vomiting!
We got his stool and urine tested at docs as he was having some unpleasant nappies.
UTI didn't even enter my head! Was expecting something to come back from the stool.

MamaSJ15 · 23/09/2021 12:21

@RoseGoldGlasses no neither did I! It's good you got to the bottom of it though, must have been quiet worrying!

I totally sympathise op! Seeing your DD in distress and having to clear up vomit and the uncertainty of it, is really unpleasant, especially when you have had broken nights too. It sounds like your DD has a strong immune system though so hopefully this will be short-lived Flowers

I found the best strategy for easing anxiety about it is to be prepared, so layered sheets on the bed with puppy/incontinence pads in between, towel over pillow, and an emergency kit of bowl, disposable gloves and Dettol close by, a good stock of Calpol, rehydration/diorylite for kids, a roll of small bin bags with tie for throwing away anything unpleasant, thermometer, dry crackers, bottled water, and just always make sure it is kept stocked up.

Then distract yourself with a good film and ring friends for a chat so you don't feel so alone Flowers

MamaSJ15 · 23/09/2021 12:45

@Hortibunda thank you for your kind words. I really hope so.
She can be a bit weird a out some things which can make 'being prepared' hard, I've managed to put a towel under her pillow and a little lower down but she wouldn't let me put it on top of her pillow. Whenever it seems like she may want to be sick I have towel nearby or a bowl, she just pushes them away! Maybe I'm not reading the signs properly haha. She wouldn't even let us put the little lamp on last night to clean her up, she just screamed 'NO!' at us!
I just hope so much that was the end of it. I'm still not gonna sleep well tonight!

It's really difficult when they are in the "no" phase! Hope you get some sleep tonight!

I know this sounds stupid but when she is better, maybe role play "when teddy is ill" and we put a towel on his pillow and have a bowl nearby just in case. "It's not nice for Teddy when he's sick but he will be better very very soon." Just so she understands and is reassured if it should happen again.

Good luck Flowers

@Hortibunda thank you, that's a really good idea 😊 x
