Teething & temperature

DS (5.5 months) had slight temp (38) Tues evening. Dressed him for bed and it had come down. Checked on him several times in the night and his temp was 36.4-37.
Yesterday temp had been up and down. Again.. got in bed and had come back down again.
Throughout the night last night, highest it got was 37.1 and now it's 38 this morning.
Think he is possibly teething (hard to tell because he's been dribbly and a fist muncher since 8 weeks old). I know that they can get temperatures when teething but would it go down at night and just come up through the day?? Thinking it's either teething or maybe an infection/virus of some sort but just baffled by the normal night time temp

My DDs temp was up and down when she was teething. If you're not already, I'd be tempted to just keep on top of the Calpol regularly and monitor his temp. Obv if nothing changes maybe a call to 111 for some advice? I found the teething definitely effects their temp though. It made my DD quite poorly. Hope he starts perking up soon, I remember feeling totally helpless. I'm expecting baby no.2 soon and dreading going through the teething process again 🙈 x

@MyGrassIsBrowner thank you. He's well in himself. Was off his bottles a few days ago but think it was the test irritating his gums really. He's playing etc. Was quite restless last night going to sleep. Wouldn't have known he had a temp other than his head feeling hot when he rested his head on me while I was carrying him. I'm not sure how long to leave it before calling GP/111 though?

@emetophobe12 if he's consistently running a high temp I'd definitely be inclined to call today, moreso if the Calpol isnt helping to bring it down. Fairly sure you can give them calprofen alongside of the calpol too which is more effective but obviously check the doses beforehand.

If he seems well in himself it wouldn't concern him too much, just make sure he's keeping up with fluids x

So 72 hours later and his temp is still up and down. It only very briefly reaches 38 before coming back down to 37.7 and then drops further again but then can go back up again. Still no temperature over night. Drinking fine (better than a few days ago). I've checked his gums and there's no signs of any teeth coming through at all. Do you think I should call 111 for this? It's not consistently high which is why I'm holding off a little bit and the fact that he seems ok in himself

At 38c it is just a fever. He will need a PCR a test or isolate for 10 days but as long as he is OK aim himself then I wouldn’t worry. Have a look on the NHS a website for fever in children, it tells you when you need to seek medical advice.

Officially teething doesn’t cause temperatures, although I know many, many parents who disagree.

Normal nappies? I’d call 111 personally as 37.7 is still a low grade fever.

It will pass though, unfortunately this will happen a lot in their first few years of life but it’s better to be safe and seek professional advice.

@Whathefisgoingon thank you. He's currently sleeping in his sleeping bag and his temp is 36.2. It drops when he's sleeping. Surely if it was a virus or infection or something it wouldn't just drop like that. Completely baffling me (also, yes plenty of wet and dirty nappies)
