Problems with Nature Babycare

MrsBumblebee · 05/12/2007 14:52

I've been using Nature Babycare nappies ever since DS (10 weeks) was born, but am finding them increasingly unsatisfactory. First, out of the last three packs I've bought, at least 4 or 5 in each pack have been unusable - either a tab missing, or the velcro-type strip on the front so badly positioned that they're unfastenable. Second, I find they leak a bit almost every time, and if I don't change DS during the night, his clothes are soaking in the morning. Have tried Pampers for a few days to compare, and haven't had a single leak. Has anyone else had similar problems? And can anyone recommend an environmentally friendly nappy that's less rubbish?

we have had odd packets from nature baby that have failed - of you email them they are very good with responding - they sent us a voucher for a new packet.
We don't find other problems with them but we only use 1 each night (washables in the day) so perhaps we manage to get away with it.
My friend uses Moltex nappies from our local health food shop. (think you can internet buy them)
Happy shopping!

Why not give cloth a go?

Washersaurus · 05/12/2007 20:14

I also had faulty packs of Nature baby nappies - I called the number on the packet and they sent me an envelope to return some of the faulty ones for testing, they then sent me some vouchers.

I use washables 99.9% of the time though, they are much more reliable

We used terry squares for our DS for the first year, and never had a leak. The two times we used a disposable we had a leak.

I think with terry squares the fact that they are so enormous means there is lots of absorbency, and you can fold them to suit the exact size of your baby. They are also dirt cheap and dry quickly on a clothes horse.

Cloth! Terry squares are ace. Plus you never have to worry about forgetting stuff when out and about, so long as you have a nappy you also have a spare blanket, kick mat, bib.......

I've tended to use naturebaby in the past for odd weekends away but found they leaked loads and ds def didn't last overnight in them so I've ended up just buying a few more terries so I can last a full 2 nights away without needing to wash!

Another yell for cloth here. There are so many different types out there that one is bound to suit you.

If you have a look through here there are a few MNers that offer tailored advice so you can get the nappies that will suit you best.

We use cloth during the day and naturecare at night and on holiday. DS has never leaked at night with the naturecare nappy nor during day time use on hols. We had a faulty pack though the tab kept failing on one side.

We use the nature care nappy sacks and we've had problems with the handles tearing off really easily. Good to know it is worth writing to them about this!

We're using Bambo Nature disposables overnight, Bumbles reusables during day. Never had problem with Bambo except for my occasional inept fastening! I did try the resusables at night but they seemed to be way too wet by morning for his comfort, whereas we can get away with a disposable ...

NineUnlovelyTinselDecorations · 08/12/2007 18:29

We use Moltex on the rare occasions DS isn't in cloth, and they have been problem free.

Lucyand2 · 10/12/2007 10:27

Moltex are really good! We used nature nappies for the first few months with DD and they got progressively worse as she got bigger. I remember we got one lot where there was a massive gap in the padding going right up the middle and the wee just poured out. Then we started with cloth and haven't looked back since (Did use moltex on holiday though..)
I must admit I'm getting some nature nappies just for the hospital then whipping baby into cloth as soon as we're home!

ExDhsNutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 10/12/2007 18:21

I find the edges of Nature ones really rough and harsh looking. Bambo get my vote instead

beckmo · 10/12/2007 20:56

I have had to stop using nature babies for the reasons OP listed. DD soaking wet staright through to the mattress around 5am each morning. I use Motherease reusables in the day and have never had a leak so last night boosted one and used it overnight and it worked brilliantly.Nature Babies breast pads work even less than the nappies which is a shame as I really wanted them to work.

ExDhsNutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 10/12/2007 21:08

I have to say though that I do like Nature wipes though - they were the only ones that didn't give ds eczema on his face and cause flare ups of it on his bum cheeks!
It's interesting that Nature are the ones you can buy in the big stores when they aren't actually that good - all clever marketing and no substance.

MrsBumblebee · 10/12/2007 21:12

Thanks for all the tips everyone. Glad it's not just me with the Nature nappies (and I agree Beckmo, their breast pads are rubbish as well). I'd like to try cloth, but I don't have a tumble dryer and only have limited space to hang out washing - and all the baby clothes washing is already driving me a bit nuts. I might well try some of the other eco disposables and see how I get on.

Hi Mrs B, we don't have tumble dryer (or space!) either - some internet sites selling reusables have advisor service that you can specify your requirements including drying restrictions. We used thenappylady.co.uk and they recommended Bumbles, which have separate booster and integral fleece liner - makes them faily quick to dry now that we have central heating... At the mo they are on clothes airer, hopefully DH will get ceiling clothes hanger put up one day. I wash them every other day, dry within one day and night. I think microfibre nappies are even faster drying but can be bulky - eg Fluffles (Tots Bots) are apparently rather big but there are other makes out there, perhaps worth asking on here whether anyone has experience of using them?

callmeoverchristmas · 11/12/2007 12:12

I only use Nature ones during the day for the same reasons. Cloth gave DD terrible nappy rash so I really wanted to stick to bio disposables. I now use Huggies at night but I am about to google a few of the others mentioned here and give them a try!

Same problems here with Nature nappies.

thell · 11/12/2007 14:10

I have been using 1 disposable at night and the main issue I've had has been with getting the size right, Nature included. DD is tall but slim, so with disposables I have had to put her in the largest nappy for her weight in order to prevent major leaking at night.
So for example: Size 2 is for 6 - 13 lbs and Size 3 is for 9 - 20 lbs ... I had to use Size 3 when she hit 9lbs.

Unfortunately she's now too big for them altogether! (at only 21m) - but weeing much less at night, so it's back to giving cloth a go in bed. Fingers crossed...

I used pampers from birth, they are the worst nappy on the market, they have aloe vera in and caused my baby terrible nappy rash, so did huggies. I then changed to nature babycare, much better, but my baby still had nappy rash. Some do break and they can leak if a baby poo's, we always placed a wrap over the top. I eventually bought 30 motherease nappies after being told by numerious people, if you have your baby in washables it will not get nappy rash, well they are right. Not once has my baby had any nappy rash or redness in a washable nappy unless she has an attack of lacto intolerence, but that would happen what ever nappy she was in. We have now bought Moltex as if she has a lacto attack I could have 14 nappies in a day and thats just poo, so I cannot go out with that many washables, so we only use Moltex for upset tummys, other than that 24 hours a day she is in motherease birth to potty even over night, and never had one leak.
