HELP Buggy for daily walk up steep hill must fold easily

Thank you for reading.

What would people recommend if my priorities are the following:

  1. Need to walk up a steep hill every day to get older sibling to school (older sibling will walk alongside)
  2. Mainly for town use
  3. Needs to fold up easily and fit in boot of my small but high hatchback car
  4. No other kids planned, not hugely fussed about basket space.

We have an uppababy vista from our firstborn which we will use for more off road adventures. We will also inherit a baby zen yoyo soon which I have used many times - I like it but doesn’t feel robust enough for every day.

I’ve been looking at the bugaboo bee but recent reviews seem to suggest it actually doesn’t fold down very easily.

The Bee folds pretty easy but pulling it back up can be a bit tricky because you can't see where to put your foot to pull it back up. We also have a Bugaboo Ant which is so much lighter it's easier to push up the 12+% hill we live on but it's a bit twee, my 2.5 year old is tiny and it's a bit like a perch.

Used to live in a town with many steep hills. In no way was pushing a buggy up the hill easier than carrying baby in a sling. Something about the angle of pushing the buggy made the hill more of a slog and you have to get weight of baby plus buggy up the hill rather than just baby.

Least horrible to push is my 3 wheel long running buggy but it is big and not manoeuvrable in tight spaces.

I loved our McLaren Techno. Felt really sturdy, folded up quickly and had big wheels which made light work of bumpy pavements.

One of the Maclarens for sure. Robust, light and good value at about £200

The baby jogger city mini is a good choice, nice to push and really comfy for the baby with a good recline and nice, big hood. It is extremely easy to fold and I could fit the double version in my Skoda citigo no problem.

I have a Bee and while it is more robust than our YoYo, I still haven't worked out how to fold it down. DS turned two last month.

Thank you all so much for your comments so far. Looks like the bee isn’t going to be the one then!

I did use a sling a lot with firstborn but think I am going to be using a buggy more this time as have the school run to contend with and will therefore be in town killing time more (I live rurally)

I have a cityjogger mini, bee and maclaren. The cityjogger mini is by far the easiest to fold and unfold and is the second easiest to push after the bee, it's also very light. I think that's probably the right choice here - having said that, I do also find the bee pretty easy to fold!

bytheby · 19/09/2021 20:00

@CaramelWaferAndTea May I ask which bee you have? The newer one seems to receive very mixed feedback!

Baby jogger city mini looks the most tempting at the moment - maclaren much cheaper though. Hmmmm

We have a mountain buggy and a yo-yo. The larger three wheeer is far easier to use on our steep hill ( it’s a 1km long hill)

We have a zeta vooom. I folded it up and put it in car boot while holding our 5wk old, very lightweight. We had the double version with our twins and I used it for school runs and dog walks so they last pretty well. They have a larger hood than most so great on sunny days.

I have a Nuna Triv, which I love. It folds like a Baby jogger city mini, but is much lighter and can be parent-facing. It also fitted well in the boot of my small hatchback.

I felt it was a bit more robust than a bugaboo bee or a baby zen yo-yo. I’ve used it everyday over the last year for long walks over rough pavements.

I think Joie have released something very similar called the Finiti, which might be worth a look?

CaramelWaferAndTea · 21/09/2021 12:54

@bytheby I have a 5.

I got the cityjogger second hand, they are indestructible - is that an option? Maclaren was also secondhand but not so indestructible

3JsMa · 21/09/2021 13:09

I tested couple of small ones with my kids (Bugaboo Bee,Mountain Buggy Swift, different Maclarens) but the best of all of them was Baby Jogger city Mini GT.The handle was at the right place and was adjustable so it didn't hurt my wrist, folds almost flat(wheels easily detachable so is super flat when you take them off) and quite light if you have to lift it with handle (in the middle if the seat which is very practical).

QforCucumber · 21/09/2021 13:17

I bought the Baby Jogger and absolutely love it! the ease of fold is the best thing about it definitely, it's also so manouvrerable! Its just great!

Generatenewname · 22/09/2021 09:09

I have a baby jogger and a maclaren quest. Baby jogger is just brilliant and I love it so much. The only downside is the fact it doesn’t really work with a buggy board - I’ve read lots of reviews.
The maclaren is good to fold too but you need two hands to push so not good if you have a small child’s hand to hold too. But I assume it could have a buggy board. The maclaren wheels are small on the quest so any slight curb is irritating.

My maclaren is barely used in comparison to baby jogger. It’s just such a shame about the buggy board situation!

DGFB · 22/09/2021 09:14

Baby jogger… can find with one hand and good for small spaces. I’d buy it again in a heartbeat

DGFB · 22/09/2021 09:14

I meant fold

LadyDanburysHat · 22/09/2021 09:15

Maclaren quest is great for folding small, but the babyjogger city mini is also fantastic and folds incredibly easily.

PurBal · 25/09/2021 15:56

Cybex Beezy. Fits in our Mini Cooper and I push it up a massive hill everyday.

PurBal · 25/09/2021 15:57

I also live rurally and walk miles with it. I’ve walked though farmyards and along footpaths with it but it’s more suited to town if I’m honest.
