How to teach DC to read IN English when at school in another language

Hi,

My DC is 5 and he speaks 4 languages. We live abroad and he is in a Catalán/Spanish school. They learn in upper case letters first, and he is doing well at that. How and when should I introduce English phonemes and words? He gets frustrated with me when, just in general conversation, a sound doesn't match what he knows from school.
Eg, he asked what the word 'police' said. He told me I was wrong Hmm because the 'C' is a /kuh/ not /sii/

He loves reading together every night, in English, and occasionally in Spanish, and when he is at his dad's, in Portuguese. I would love to get him reading in En, but don't want to push /confuse him.

Any tips gratefully received!

Have a look at Oak Academy .. really lovely online lessons from British Teachers - you can work through phonics as you would in an English classroom

Can you download an app like " teach my monster to read" or do Readingeggs. Then they'll be introduced in a fun way

Our DC go to a Welsh school but speak English at home - they had no worries with learning to read etc in English with no specific help other than encouragement when they took the initiative to try and spell out words. We found that constantly explaining that eg "it's a kuh in this word in English" helped them learn that the two languages were different and would not phonetically be the same. My eldest was on the same reading level in both languages despite never having officially learnt English at that point. If your DS is asking what words say he is on the right track 😊

I'll have a look, thanks. I am a teacher and have taught phonics, so I could do that. I'm just worried about confusing him really

Duolingo

He is too young for Duolingo really. I use it and it's great, but if he can't read lower case letters at all, he won't be able to do it.
