I have a 6 month old and I am a first time mom. My boy is usually a very happy and content baby, he usually only makes a fuss when he's tired, hungry, needs a diaper change or doesn't feel well.

He has recently learned to roll over from his back to his tummy, he has not figured out how to roll from his tummy to his back. But the past few days the minute I put him down he's on his stomach and he SCREAMS so loud because he's trying to reach his toys and trying to push himselfforward. Ive tried to hand him his toys or give him something to chew on (he's teething too) but it doesn't stop it. I will sometimes try to roll him back over to give him a break but he gets mad then flips back over on his stomach.

Is this normal? What can I do to get him to stop screaming?

It’s normal, my little one was like this a week or so ago now he’s non stop crawling and into everything 😂

We have exactly the same. I bought some toys she can play with sitting up (supported/cushioned) and that distracts her from wanting to be trying to crawl all the time.

There's a great website called ManaOT which talks about the steps children go through as they approach milestones like crawling that you might find helpful -she shares lots of suggestions for ways you can help them practice the skills and strength they need without so much frustration.

Totally normal op.
I remember those days well 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thatsplentyjack · 17/09/2021 20:51

Yup, it's usually just frustration that they are then stuck. I can't really remember with my other 2 but with my dd, everytime I put her down on her back she would flip over on to her front and cry because she was then stuck. If I turned her back she would just flip back over. She soon figured it out and is crawling all over the house now. Infact she's now determined she's going to stand all the time!

Normal. It’ll pass. Then it’ll come back again with each milestone. My DS (16 mo) has had quite a scream-y night trying to climb the stairs…

This will be the first of many frustrated screams!

Today my almost 2 year old sobbed hysterically because I gave her the 'wrong' cup.

Thank you for all of your responses!! Una I'll definitely check out that website.

So when he does this, do I just let him figure it out and not intervene?

Up to you really. Depends how upset he's getting. Shouting in frustration, I would leave him. Crying/screaming because he's actually upset, I would pick him up and distract him until he's happy again.

CasaBonita · 17/09/2021 23:54

Omg mine was born frustrated Hmm

No sadly there's nothing you can do, but beware, once he can crawl he'll want to walk Grin

My baby gets screamy in the days leading up to him mastering a new skill. I think it’s frustration - once he has mastered the skill the screaming stops.

It’s very annoying, but you just have to ride it out!
