Leaking nighttime nappies - any suggestions?

My LO (7mo) is a great sleeper (fortunately!), however this means that come morning, she has often soaked through her nappy and sleep bag. It doesn’t bother her - she just carries on sleeping but it isn’t very nice for her to wake up covered in wee every day, and I am worried that it will bother her as the nights start to get colder. Plus I am getting fed up with washing sleep bags every single day.

I have tried only giving her a small amount of milk before bed, bigger nappies, smaller nappies, pampers nappies at night (use Aldi rest of the time), but she still wakes up soaked!

I am making sure the frilly bits on the legs are turned out, but the leakage seems to come out of the top of the nappy. She is a skinny baby but her nappies aren’t loose around her waist so I think it is just the sheer volume of wee!!

Has anybody got a solution? Any nappies that are ultra absorbent for nighttime use? Should I look into reusable nappies at night or are they worse for leakages?

Thanks!

Leaky nappies means it's either too small or too big. Honestly! It's hardly ever any other reason.

Can you put a pair if toddler pants over the top of the nappy to put extra pressure on it so it soaks it up quicker, the smallest pants you can find might help a bit.

@grey12
Yes this is what I had previously read when I looked it and why I have already tried different sizes. It still leaks.

Or that the baby is feeding all night long. As soon as my babies reduced their feeds this wasn't an issue. From the OP it sounds like they don't feed much in the night though? I have heard some people double up on nappies but don't know how successful it is. Certainly with reusables, I've doubled up on inserts.
HopeWish · 17/09/2021 09:11

@Kakser She doesn’t feed in the night at all. Has a small bottle (4oz) just before bed as it settles her then sleeps through until morning. I was thinking of putting a reusable over her disposable. Do you think this is worth a try?

Use a reusable nappy wrap over the top eg a Motherese airflow - that worked for us

elliejjtiny · 17/09/2021 09:14

I don't know the solution but I have the same problem. DS is 8 and leaks through his night time nappy most nights.

JuneOsborne · 17/09/2021 09:14

Get those waterproof pant things that our mothers used to use over our Terry nappies. Boots used to sell them.

SW1amp · 17/09/2021 09:14

DS was a skinny legged leaker as well

I used to put 2 nappies on him at night
One normal one, and then a second one over the top, back to front

It was a bit of a faff if he needed a middle of the night change but it was better than the extra laundry

Wagglerock · 17/09/2021 09:17

Is she sleeping on her front? I found a nappy on back to front worked better for my front sleeper.

HopeWish · 17/09/2021 09:19

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I will try doubling up and if that doesn’t work I will look into the reusable nappy wraps.

When DD leaks it's for one of two reason

  1. Nappy too small so I have to go up a size which does the trick.
  1. Style of nappy. She has recently started wriggling around a lot when changing so I got pull up nappy pants for her. Quickly learnt not to use at night as she leaked through. In the traditional style nappies she doesn't have this issue.
BertieBotts · 17/09/2021 09:21

Check her vests aren't too small.

Use the + sizes - they are more absorbent.

Or double layer :)

Teaandcakeordeath83 · 17/09/2021 09:24

Motherease airflow wrap over the top of your disposable or reuseable. They're bomb proof!

mummaelle · 17/09/2021 09:30

I buy the leading brand nappies for my daughter and even they leaked during the night because they were too small! I moved up a size and they're perfect

T0rt0ise · 17/09/2021 10:19

I assume you're using the + nappies? The plus is for absorbancy rather than size so I'd not I'd swap to those first.

Vicky1989x · 17/09/2021 10:28

Are her vests too snug? I’d check that first. I use Pampers Pure at night, never have an issue (unless I don’t do them up properly which happens sometimes with a wiggly toddler). My DD is skinny too and found Pampers Pure the best fit for her - they’re quite expensive so I just use them at night and recently switched to nappy pants during the day (she’s 16 months).

Use a pad meant for bladder weakness/incontinence? Thats what I do, works a treat!
