2 year old not sleeping AT ALL

Please can someone help. DS must be so tired. He’s 2 years 2 months. He’s never been a fantastic sleeper but we do have really good runs sometimes. However the last couple of nights have been horrendous. Goes in to bed fine. Pretty much straight asleep. 15/30 mins later inconsolable crying, kicking, screaming, arms flaying- you name it. He’s been getting so frustrated nothing seems to calm him down. Last night neither of us had any sleep as there was only 15 mins approx between each crying fit. He can barley keep eyes open. So I thought he’d nap today. Again went down fine but awake crying very shortly after. He did 9/10 settle him self I didn’t go in every time as there was nothing he wanted/needed from me. DH says to turn monitor off and keep door open I’ll hear him if he really needs me. Same with tonight. Seems fine in him self and I’m fully aware of teething, night terrors etc and he does experience night terrors but this is not that. I do think he’s teething but has never caused this much disruption before. I’ve tried him coming in my bed, me sleeping in or next to cot, bringing him down stairs, Milk, nappy, water, calpol. All the obvious. Is there anything I’ve missed and could do for him. He doesn’t want to be held, he doesn’t want to be left. Im just at my wits end and sooo tired. Someone please help. Any ideas?

We had that 2 nights in a row 6 months ago. Our son is a year older than yours so was able to tell us what was wrong when we managed to calm him down (after about an hour) - it was ear ache. Notorious for causing the symptoms you describe at night. Have you tried giving calpol?

LeavesOffTheCactus · 16/09/2021 22:10

Sorry just seen you have tried calpol. Our son only really calmed down after a dose of calpol AND ibuprofen.

Waking after that sort of amount of time suggests he’s maybe in some sort of pain? Tummy ache? Or ear ache? My DS had awful ear infections and would wake a lot and could not lie flat in his cot or even the bed next to us. I often slept with him propped up in my arms (not recommending this as I know it’s not safe sleeping at all but we were completely desperate!)

Some ideas to try: Get his ears etc checked if possible. Consider some calpol before bed. Maybe prop his bed/cot/pillow up slightly. Give a tummy massage before bed. Look at whether he is ready to drop day naps. Keep a good diary to see if there are any potential triggers there.

I hope it improves. No sleep is so hard!

I find ibuprofen better for teething.

TTCbaby · 16/09/2021 22:17

Thank you guys so much. Will definitely get his ears looked at tomorrow if we don’t have a better night tonight. I’ll try ibroprophen on the next waking. He won’t stay still enough for me to do any massages etc. he may sleep
In my arms but he’s a naturally light sleep and as soon as I move even a little bit he wakes. Thank you for your advice both of you. I don’t judge. Safe sleeping isn’t always doable at desperate times. Sometimes you gotta do what works best at the time. Will keep you posted :).

Could it be worms? Check his bottom with a torch

TTCbaby · 16/09/2021 22:19

Is worms common in toddlers? I don’t know much about it. Is it dangerous? Sorry if I sound a bit silly.

Worms is very common and not dangerous. But it causes itching at night and broken sleep. Read up on it on NHS website - threadworms NHS..

TTCbaby · 16/09/2021 22:26

Yeah I’ve just had a read. Thank you. Can you get treatment over the counter?

Yep it's a tablet that everyone in the family takes, (except under a certain age- 1 or 2 I think) and then you have to wash all bedding and clothes, and wear underwear in bed for a week or two - it'll say it all on the website and on the packaging. You can get it in the chemist or you can get it prescribed if the GP diagnoses your son.

Thank you so much. Massive help. Definitely something else to consider :)
