Weaning - 5 months - help!

Darcie is 5 months on 22nd September and we have started weaning. (I had my reasons to start early, don’t want a weaning debate)

I have started her on single fruit/vegetable purées & porridge. To any mums that have started weaning, or done the whole weaning thing before, when do I move on to mixed vegetables/fruit purées and then when do I introduce meat/dairy into them? Feel clueless and just wanted to get an idea of what others are doing

You should stick to purées until she’s 6 months old. Once she’s six months you can basically feed her anything. It’s fine to do mixed fruit purées whenever you’re ready, just make sure that whenever you’re introducing a new food do it in isolation so that if she has an allergic reaction you know what triggered it.

If you've started early then you should have a professional helping you with weaning and they will be able to answer these questions and guide you on what foods should be introduced.

If you've decided to give your 4 month old food independent of medical advice I would seek medical advice so you have someone to discuss this with.

I’ve weaned 2 babies early due to reflux. Mixed fruit and veg purées and meat at 5 months are fine. You might want to stick to easy to digest protein like chicken initially, potential allergens it’s a good idea to introduce one at a time so you’ll be able to pinpoint the cause of any reaction. But any sort of purée is fine. I didn’t do dairy at that stage, mainly because I used formula for the cereal so it would be familiar and baby wasn’t yet having complete meals that would include dairy in the recipe. From 6 months though they can pretty much have anything except honey so at that point crack on and feed whatever you like including finger foods!

I should add that this is what was suggested by our doctor. Since you’ve started so early I’m assuming it’s on medical advice too so it’s
always best to discuss with a professional in case they have different advice related to your baby’s specific health needs.

This is a great post, and one I 100% agree with.

Meat, dairy, gluten are ok from 6 months. Up until then its fruit, veg, gluten free cereal. You can mix and match the fruit and veg.

The medical advice will all depend on the reasons why you are weaning early for example if it’s for allergies then you may need to stick to single puree and introduce allergens within a certain time frame or not all all depending on the type of allergies. You really need to speak to a paediatric dietitian.

I weaned my first at five months - he was over 10lbs at birth and was hungry! Six months breast feeding exclusively was also not the recommendation then (take all those with a huge grain of salt - you know your baby best).
Started on banana, but sweet potato was the basis for a lot of meals. Just blended it up. Finger foods also available - no teeth until after one year so he had to be able to gum them.

Once she is 6/7 months old have a look at Ella's. They do purées and then textured sachets too of absolutely everything!
