Just that really. My DS is 17mo so we havent really done a 'child orientated' christmas yet. Same with his 1st birthday. When did your DC start to really enjoy santa/presents etc etc?

3 !

Yes, probably started to understand the occasions around age 3, but the build-up and consistently remembering that the date was on its way took longer.

When DS was 5 we were round at his auntie's house for Christmas and DH was awake before we were. DS woke up and heard his dad's voice from another room and just said "Dad is awake". He had totally forgotten it was Christmas! Xmas Smile

Don't know about my children, but I remember my own 3rd birthday. We had spent the night before in the Anderson shelter in the garden, and I remember walking up the garden path in my slippers and dressing gown feeling excited.

By 2 she was totally aware of presents and some how realised that Father Christmas had been. She totally understood what birthdays were (or what happens on them) by around 2.5 and we were counting down to her birthday for months. She has only just turned 3 and I can imagine she will be off the walls excited by the time Christmas comes around.

DD will be 4 in October, she now knows that her birthday is in October and is excited (she thinks birthdays are all about cake). She wasn't really interested in her birthday last year but did start engaging in Christmas. She still remembers visiting father Christmas, leaving mince pies and brandy out for him on Christmas Eve and getting her stocking from him. She keeps talking about it so I think she will really enjoy Christmas this year.
My son turned 1 at Christmas last year and didn't notice either event. I think it will be the same this year although he will get excited seeing the lights and will join in his sister's excitement

However, she took 3 days to open her presents - because she would play with everything she got for a couple of hours. And then on her actual birthday she didn't realise it was her birthday until we told her.

3ish but not hugely bothered still by 4 eldest Ds fully got it all 😂

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/09/2021 15:42

My younger DD was about 2.5, but I think that was having a 4yo sister egging it on!

welshweasel · 13/09/2021 15:44

My eldest has January birthday. He was properly excited for the Xmas juts before he turned 4 and ditto his 4th birthday. Before that he obviously enjoyed the presents and fuss but didn’t really understand the concept.

3/4

Before 2. DD2 would have been 19 months last Christmas and she knew Santa would bring presents of toys and sweets. Young children have low expectations and think they will get one present and one bag of sweets and they are easily overwhelmed by much more.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 13/09/2021 15:54

Ah ok. My son has a march birthday so will be coming on 2 by christmas. From this im guessing he'll enjoy the presents and the fun of everyone being together (we have big family christmases), but wont really 'get it' yet. Ill lay off Santa for another year then!

3 for Christmas .. she was 3.5 last Christmas & fully got Santa & presents & Christmas Eve etc! And I’d say 4 for her birthday. She had no idea when her birthday was aged 3 but still obviously had a nice (lockdown) day & loved opening gifts & eating cake. But she was SO excited for her 4th birthday this year! She couldn’t sleep bless her ❤️

GettingItOutThere · 13/09/2021 15:55

not quite two. Absolutely wonderful moment in engaging that the weirdo in the red suit left all these gifts!

such an excited child, but really engaging = 3!

NavigatingAdolescence · 13/09/2021 15:58

Hasn’t ever been bothered about Xmas. Loved being the centre of attention when she turned 1, naming ceremony on her 2nd birthday with even more people. Proper birthday excitement from 3 (now almost 11).

Much prefer that to the utter weirdness that is the Xmas tat-fest!

3 was pretty fun for both Christmas and birthday, though I think this year (4) will be even more exciting. He didn't really get it at 2.
