HELL - second molars AND an ear infection

Im sorry for the long post..For the past 4 months or so my DD (2.4yrs) has been getting up early (5am ish) when she used to sleep 7-7 reliably. Put it down to a phase and trying to ride it out. A couple of weeks ago she got a high temp and was unwell for a couple of days. A week later (last Weds) sent home from nursery with another high temp and the doc said it was an ear infection and gave amoxicilin. Her sleep for the last week has been HORRENDOUS, waking constantly, up early and falling asleep in the daytime because she's so exhausted. The antibiotics haven't yet cleared her ear infection up (had her checked over yesterday as she's off her food and water) but they wouldn't give a different type of antibiotic and just said keep an eye on her. About 2 days ago I saw her top second molar coming through so am wondering if her teeth are causing her a lot of pain too (calpol and nurofen seem to do nothing) and stopping her from eating and drinking. My question is, should she still have a lingering inflamed ear after nearly a week of antibiotics? Should I take her back to the GP? I feel like there's quite a lot going on for her and I'm totally confused as to what I can do to help her - I NEED HELP (and a gin...).

Ah I feel you! In the same situation with my 2.5yo minus the ear infection. But the rest of your post I could have written myself!

Ear infections are generally misdiagnosed by GPs (this is my line of work and I see it often). Usually viral so antibiotics don't work and it will usually just clear in time itself. Antibiotics should generally only be given if the eardrum perforates. Hopefully it passes quickly for her, it's miserable for them.

I'd just keep up with the calpol and nurofen personally, alternating them when it's bad so she's never going more than a couple of hours without something. Within the safe limits obvs.

Anbesol liquid is also good for teething and can be used alongside calpol and nurofen

Thank you both! We ended up back at the GP because I wasn't happy with how she was. Turns out she has an ear infection (the dreaded word 'viral' was used rendering antibiotics useless!) and she also has traces of a UTI as well as her second molars. No wonder she's bloody miserable. Doctor is still concerned her fever hasn't gone down in nearly a week so she's going to call me in a few hours and see how DD is after another dose of calpol....I REALLY hope she's better soon. My heart is breaking for her.
