My nappy plan - how does it sound?

My MIL is today delivering us birth to potty pack of bamboozles for baby due on 2nd Dec. It is 20x size 2 popper nappies and 4 size 1 and 4 size 2 wraps. Nappies should fit from 10lb and wraps from 8lb (so which one is it, how fat does baby need to be???) Have accepted they are unlikely to fit straight away and had thought I would just use disposables in the mean time while baby grows and I sort myself out. Then realised I have terry squares and muslins for catching sick, mop cloths etc. So I have bought 3 nappi nippas and ordered a pack of 5 tommee tippee newborn wraps (5 for £10) so I can use these as actual nappies.

Plan is after meconium has passed, to use terries/muslins during the day and disps at night (when can't be arsed faffing with folding etc). How well do tommee tippee wraps work with flat nappies? which is best fold?

Will then use bamboozles when baby fat enough and terries as back up as bamboo takes ages to dry doesn't it?

Also got the impression somewhere that you don't put the wraps in teh nappy bucket as it affects its waterproofness. Is that right? What do i do with them then?

You'll be able to pad fold the muslins and terries to fit inside the tomee tippee wraps very well. You can fan the back out to help catch the poo better which is especially helpful if you are breastfeeding see here for advice on folds www.thenappylady.

hope this helps.

Good plan - following a similar one myself with DC3 little ewe terries until big enough for Size 1 bambozles.

Think you might have a little wait until LO can use the Size 2 bamboozles (I think they are little optomistic on the 'fit from' size) but it depends on the birth weight and shape of you little one. Ave baby (whatever that is ) will reach 10lbs at about 6 weeks but at that weight a size 2 bamboozle used as a birth to potty nappy might look a little bulky (especially if you are used to seeing them in disposables).

The wraps and nappies have a different sizing so yes nappies from 10lb and wraps from 8lb. The tots wraps are gussetted so you might be able to use those with your terries and muslins too.

Wraps can go in the nappy bucket with the nappies when they are soiled. Some people (myself included) do not put them in the nappy bucket if the nappies are being soaked in anything other than plain water as nappy soak solutions and essential oils can have an adverse effect on the wraps.

Bamboozles can take a while to dry but if you have the full btp pack of 20 you'll be fine. If you find the totsbots wraps don't suit your baby's shape try motherease airflow - they seem to be bombproof for most shapes of babies.

Good luck

btw, there is no need to soak your nappies if you don't want to, dry pailing is fine too (and less tricky when transferring nappies to washing machine )

thanks everyone. Mil has brought nappies, they're lovely, in the washing machine now! She also bought a day pack (ie 5 plus 1 wrap) of size 1 bamboozles as she hates the thought of her grandchild wearing disposable nappies - says the poor thing'll get a sore bum!

she also got us an extra 2 wraps in each size so now have 6 size 1 and 6 size 2 (plus the 5 tommee tippee newborn). there is 4 white and 2 patterned in each size. She chose some coloured nappies as well ( but most are cream) so the nappies co-ordinate with the wraps!!!!

as well as all this she has knitted a tonne of cardigans AND an all in one! Its all so lovely. I WANT MY BABY SO I CAN PLAY MUMMIES AND DADDIES

hi, we're planning a similar plan also, if you want to be a bit more eco, then try the nature baby disposables which biodegrade much better than pampers etc and have far less chemicals in them, you can get them at waitrose, sainsburys and big tescos as well as health food shops and online, they were recommended to me by fellow MN's.

lairyfairy · 05/12/2007 09:04

Are you playing mummy yet?

lairyfairy · 05/12/2007 09:06

Also sounds like you have the best MIL in the world. mine all said you are silly If you think you can wash nappies and look after a newborn, 4year and 2 dds on they have all been proved wrong

thebluefoxategreensocks · 05/12/2007 21:47

awww, what a lovely MIL you have! That would be fun to get so many brand new bamboozles! I just love bamboo - it's brilliant! They do take longer to dry compared with ordinary terry nappies, but they are a lot more absorbent, and I don't think they feel so "wet", even when they have loads more urine soaked in than other nappies. So I would guess they're more comfy for baby too.

In any case, if you end up having any problems with them...before you think it's the nappies, I've found that wraps can often be the biggest problem with resuables. I've tried quite a few, and the Motherease Airflows are just the best. A lot of the wraps end up letting a bit of urine leaking/wicking. But I hardly ever have problems with ME Airflows. And they look really comfy too. Not trying to say your Tots wraps will be bad, but just recommending Motherease in case you need anything later on.

Thanks everyone - have posted on another thread about trouble drying them - is going to be 48 hours at this rate . The tots wraps came with the bamboozles as it was a birth to potty pack from an ebay(and real life) shop cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tots-Bots-Bamboozle-Birth-To-Potty-Pack-Award-Winning_W0QQitemZ190109112573QQi hZ009QQcategoryZ26269QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
I bought the tommee tippee one (made by bummis) as I read these are really good with pad folded terries and also they were very cheap at 5 for £10 (but not cheap if turn out to be rubbish) If we have problems with the tots wraps I will try the motherease ones, lots of people are recommending them.

Any suggestions on the best way to get bamboozles dry quickly when weather isn't agreeable. What are your drying times?

Motherease wraps are fantastic but the tots wrap ones are also good as long as they fit, totally depends on the shape of your child. You won't knopw until you try. I don't have any advice on the drying but you could look on www.kittykins.co.uk Sorry I don't know how to do links.

Hiya

with my bamboo nappies, I leave then to dry on rack/clothes horse overnight then stick them on radiator during the day. If you give them a shake every so often so they shouldn't get too crunchy (also bit of white vinegar in conditioner drawer of washer)

If you're worried about drying times, get a couple of terry squares (can even get bamboo squares!) just as a back up.

Best of luck to you!

Liz79 - OK, this is going to sound weird (not a first for me) but my hemp nappies have taken an age to dry this last wash, I think the weather has an effect even though I am drying them inside (can't explain it any other way as I've done the same routine as always). We do live in a 200+ year old cob house, so chances are, in our house, that is what happens.

Don't be too dispondent just yet. Lots of poeple use bamboozles so they can't be too bad to dry I guess.

Do you have an airing cupboard you can hang them in to dry (not tried it myself due to lack of airing cupboard but I know someone else who does this).

nappyaddict · 08/02/2008 02:28

first i rinse all the nappies under the cold water tap (not hot - it sets stains). then i put them all in the nappy bucket which is filled with cold water and a few drops of grapefruit seed extract and sometimes some nappy fresh. i don't use vinegar or lemon juice cos it can damage the elastic or any oils cos they can make the nappies start replling liquid. i wet pail cos it breaks down the urine and loosens stains so the nappies last longer. i don't soak wraps though cos this affects their waterproofness.

i do a prewash with no detergent and a few drops of GSE, a 30 degree wash with half a tablet or 1/4 the recommended amount of powder/liquid (we use non-bio liquid cos powder usually contains brighteners and perfumes which damage the nappy) and an extra rinse with a few drops of GSE if the final rinse of the wash programme still had suds in it. don't use fabric conditioner cos it coats the fibres and so reduces absorbancy. i hand wash wraps cos it makes them last longer.

i'm another fan of line drying as much as possible, but if not then i line dry inside on an airer near the radiator or in the airing cupboard. i don't put them directly on the radiators or tumble dry as this can damage them in the long run. after i've hand washed the wraps i wipe them out with a towel to remove excess moisture and dry them as per the nappies.

nappyaddict · 08/02/2008 02:29

btw if you do decide to tumbledry the nappies tend to hold on to their smells more.

nappyaddict · 08/02/2008 02:35

oh and it might sound bizarre but i got this tip off babykind. to keep your nappies soft the most effective and eco-friendly way is to catch some rain water and soak your nappies in it before spinning and drying as usual! we've got a waterbutt so just soak the nappies in water from that.

nappyaddict · 08/02/2008 02:41

don't use biological washing powders cos they can also damage nappies.

nappyaddict · 08/02/2008 14:35

i try to do a wash every day because the longer nappies remain wet the quicker the fabrics will break down.
