What do your 10 year olds read?

So, my daughter will be 10 next year, has always been a good reader but we've done all the Jacequline Wilson, Dorky diaries, Harry Potter etc kind of books... I've got her a few from TK Maxx but the content of some more complex ones aren't ideal 😬 any suggestions would be amazing! Now the 6 weeks are over and the reading diaries are back out I need something new to listen to! X

My Dsis had a book published earlier this year that's aimed at the 8-12 year old market. I admit that I am totally biased, but I think it's a great read (and enjoyable for any age).
It's called Glitter Gets Everywhere and is available from Amazon and Waterstones. Dsis lives in the US and that's where it was published so I don't think that any bookshops here have got copies in.
Here's the link https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/0063034484/ref=tmmhrddswatch0?ie=UTF8&qid=1631474607&sr=8-1

Artemis Fowl, Enola Holmes, Unfortunate events, Benedict society, Percy Jackson and the lightning thief series and the Egyptian, Viking and similar series' also anything by Cressida Cowell. All interesting adventure based with challenging vocab but appropriate content.

DD is similar age and has recently enjoyed the Land of Stories books, the Lily books and Rose books by Holly Webb, Midnight Guardians, and Midnight Unicorn books. There was also a book from the library called Lily and the Rockets she loved about a young woman who played in the women's football league in WW1.

She's also read quite a few random books from the charity shop which I can't remember the names of but it's been a good source of reading material over the summer

Did you find some of the Dork Diaries and J Wilson books' stories quite mature? There are some DD where the characters have a crush or it's all about frenemies and stuff and the lots of the JW stories are quite complex.

I've not found that too much, she does read them to me most nights so we can sign her reading diary too. Its just their quite the samey almost? Then some too old (Angus, thongs and full on snogging?!?!) I have looked at the one @QueenOfToast reccomended and think we'll download onto her kindle! Which sounds good. Its honestly so hard 🤷‍♀️

I'm excited that I've made a sale for DSis! I really hope your DD enjoys the book.

Also, you could try searching for "middle grade" books as a way to find writing aimed at your DDs age group. I'd never heard the term until DSis told me that her book was being published in this category. Some of it might be too young (it covers 8-12) but it would be a way of filtering out the YA stuff.

Dd (9) currently likes:
The Skulduggery series
The School of Good and Evil series - not a far cry from Harry Potter type themes.

She didn't get on with JW - found the realism too upsetting.
(But the killing and fighting in Skulduggery is apparently fine) Hmm

Coronawireless · 20/09/2021 09:50

Malory Towers series
Murder Most unladylike series
Wimpy kid series
Marianne Dreams (Catherine storr)
City of Ember (Jeanne du Prau)
Percy Jackson series (up to a point)

The Cogheart series! Brilliant books - the lead character is a girl out to solve mysteries set in a sort of steampunk Victorian era, full of magic and adventure with a mechanical fox side kick. DS and I both love them.

My youngest is almost 10, and his favourite books are the Horrible Science/Geography/Maths books, The Birchbark House series, The Blackwell Pages trilogy, and he and DD2 (12) have been reading The Royal Guide to Monster Slaying books repeatedly too. He's enjoying the libraries being back open, but still goes back to those regularly.

The younger Pratchett books (particularly Maurice and his Educated Rodents) also get a lot of attention by my younger kids.
