Blw help

Please talk to me about baby led weaning.

I'm set on doing it but I'm nervous about gagging/choking.

Choking is one of my worst fears (I choked as a child), and I'd love some reassurance please.

DS is 6 months and I'm just waiting until I've got my head together to begin really! He's EBF if that makes any difference.

Mine never choked and tried lots of foods. Their diet is extremely diverse. However, if I had a do over, I'd have weaned the old fashioned way, I've never known such messy eaters 🙈 I swear it's cause blw meant everything was finger food.....they're still sloppy eaters now at 12(with sen) and 5.

Watch a few YouTube clips so you recognise the difference between gagging and choking. He will gag, and at first it will be scary for you and him, but the most important thing is that he doesn’t sense that you’re anxious. If you don’t think you can hide your anxiety very well, get somebody else to feed him first and take yourself out of the room.
Puffs are a good place to start because they dissolve fast in saliva. That means if your ds gets a piece into his mouth and doesn’t know what to do, it will melt into a goo he can swallow with little effort.
My DC’s first finger foods were finger-sized batons of well-cooked carrot and parsnip, strips of omelette or boiled egg, well-cooked penne pasta, matchsticks of cheese, broccoli florets and chunks of white fish.
Good luck

Consider doing a baby first aid course to boost your confidence in responding to gagging and choking and make sure you know the difference. Gagging is normal and is usually noisy and followed by coughing. This is fine and baby doesn’t need help. Choking is usually silent and baby might turn blue and needs help asap. Baby wafers/puffs/crisps are good as they just sort of melt in their mouth so might help build your confidence

Have you read the Gill Rapely book? Its great and gives lots of pointers. If it helps, I think they have shown that there isn't any increased risk of choking with BLW than with purees. Don't expect your baby to really eat anything for weeks...they learn to chew first. Offer very small amounts so you don't overwhelm them. We did it with DS and he is a great eater!
