Looking after ill DD - WWYD?

Jenster03 · 09/09/2021 17:35

My 23m old DD has had a temperature all day and isn't herself. My husband works from home and was able to muddle through today looking after her. She's still not right this evening.
I've requested a GP call and have ordered a PCR.
It would be only fair if I stayed home and looked after her tomorrow, but I can't bring myself to tell my boss.
I'm a school teacher and we're thin on the ground with staff levels as it is.

My parents normally have her Fridays but I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that with her having a temperature.
Of course she might be fine by tomorrow.

If not though, WWYD? Do you still ask for help from grandparents even if it's a fever?

Regardless of your preferences, she can't go anywhere until you get a negative test. Children get ill, and if you need a day off to look after her, then you need a day off to look after her.

headintheproverbial · 09/09/2021 18:49

Why can't your husband do it if you're really stretched at work? Or at least take half the day so you can offer that to your boss?

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/09/2021 18:52

Just take the day off. Your job is not more important than your DHs.
You need to live up to your commitment to fairly split the leave to care for a sick DC.

I definitely would ask anyone else to have her, especially not grandparents.

Can you not talk to your DH and decide between you whether he can do another day 'muddling through' if you come home as soon as the bell goes tomorrow.

Too hard to say without knowing all the ins & outs only you & he will know

I hope it's just a 'normal' bug & things will be back on track next week!

If DH does do tomorrow, id be making sure your boss knows DH 'took the hit' this time, your turn next time!

T0rt0ise · 09/09/2021 19:28

I'm a teacher and DH and I split the days. He works from home but 'muddling through' really isn't fair on his employers. I also wouldn't ask grandparents just in case unless really, really stuck (i e you'd both had multiple days off)

Unfortunately these are the rules at the moment and we have to do the tests and await results.

Can’t be helped when you’re a parent and as much as others parents want schools open at some point they aren’t going to be able to cope with staff absences.

Ring in sick because you won’t get paid.

Strictly1 · 09/09/2021 19:53

Please don't lie to your boss. Chances are you will be paid. Usually an allowance of ten days is given for throughout the year. It will say in the policy.

Didyeaye · 09/09/2021 20:05

Should you not all be isolating until you get her PCR results?

BluebellsGreenbells · 09/09/2021 22:53

No isolation of double jabbed

We’ve had confirmation there is no pay of days taken to look after ill children - if they get covid x3 kids that’s no pay for weeks.

Teachers are stuffed

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 09/09/2021 23:12

@BluebellsGreenbells

That is absolutely disgusting Confused

I don't get paid if I have to be off with one of my dc however I don't work in an important role like teaching and my job although close contact is only one on one at a time so can still take the right precautions but teaching staff have no choice but to be in the high risk role and then to not be paid if you have to look after your own poorly child is bloody awful

It just gets better and better this country the way valuable staff are treated.

LizzieBet14 · 09/09/2021 23:16

We generally split the day between us rather than send to Grandparents. They only go there if it's something that's not contagious etc

Didyeaye · 10/09/2021 13:10

@BluebellsGreenbells you’re right, sorry - assuming OP isn’t in Scotland. I defaulted to our guidelines
