18m old can’t stay up past 6:30pm.

I’m just wondering if anyone has the same experience.
DS is just 18m old and dropped his second nap in nursery about 6m ago, and at home about 2m ago. Since then he is unable to stay up past 6:30pm.
He becomes so tired and teary and takes himself over to his cot ready for bed.

He goes to sleep straight away and 9 times out of 10 stays asleep until about 6:30 in the morning.

I’m happy with this as I feel cruel keeping him up longer, but I’m wondering how long this will continue? So many people comment to me that it’s too early, but I physically can’t make him stay awake - it would feel like torture!

Is anyone else’s little one in bed so early ?

If it works for you and him, then it works

That sounds fantastic! He gets a great sleep which must make him much happier in the daytime. Are you working? What time are you and your partner home in the evening?

Matilda1981 · 06/09/2021 18:53

My gosh - enjoy these times - none have mine have stayed up past half 6 at this age - eldest is now 9 and she goes to bed a lot later now and I’m nearly ready for bed by the time I can have the tv to myself!!!

Seriously why worry? If he’s tired let him sleep.

God you have the dream baby

DD is 2.5 and usually asleep by 6.45!

ApolloandDaphne · 06/09/2021 18:55

My DDs loved their sleep and their bed at that age and went off to bed early. They still do as adults tbh! Enjoy it. It is very normal.

bloodywhitecat · 06/09/2021 18:55

Mine's 16 months, has just dropped his morning nap and needs to be in his bed by 6.30 too. He has always been the same.

Eileen101 · 06/09/2021 18:56

Mine too. Mine is nearly 18 months. Has recently dropped to 1 nap, unless we're going for a day out in the car when she still has two. She's so tired by a similar time. So today they've both been in bed since 6pm fast asleep, as 3.5 yo has just started dropping naps completely.
I just accept that's the way it is - my eldest was like this at that age too.
I don't see a problem with an early bedtime. Mine will rise early regardless of bedtime Grin

Thank you for your kind replies!

Honestly it has taken a lot of work to get him to sleep through the night… he didn’t sleep through once until he was gone one year old!

I am mostly of the thought that if it works then it’s good, but I question when others sound a bit judgey about how early it is!

Classic self doubt when faced with the opinion of others I suppose!

Both my children had a 6.30 bedtime and slept through until 6.30 in the morning. When DD started school admittedly she has a July birthday so she started at just 4, she would sleep from 5pm until 5am.

Simonjt · 06/09/2021 18:56

Long may it continue! My six year old still goes to bed early, he’s already asleep, bliss.

YukoandHiro · 06/09/2021 18:56

My eldest switched to this pattern when she dropped her nap at 2.5. I bloody loved it - some proper adult time to clear up, eat and rest in the evening. I felt my most refreshed at this point. She's now 4 and rarely asleep before 8pm. My youngest is 10m and needs to be down by 7pm or she wakes more frequently in the night (no I can't work they out either)

RavenclawsRoar · 06/09/2021 18:57

Oh my god I wish mine would do this!! We are in a nightmare phase of ds not really needing a nap, but also not able to last all day which means bedtime is either stupidly early followed by a 5am wake up, or he is completely over tired by the evening and bedtime takes about 3 hours...! Honestly if you are all getting decent sleep then change nothing!

newtolineofduty · 06/09/2021 18:58

Tell everyone to F off!!! My daughter (almost 3) is asleep at 6 (no nap) and sleeps 12 hours. Any later than that and she's overtired and bedtime is a nightmare! Xxx

BeeDavis · 06/09/2021 19:38

My mum says I used to bang on the door to go to bed on an evening! Due my first baby in 4 week and I bloody hope mine is the same 😅

Mol1628 · 06/09/2021 19:51

Sounds great to me. My almost 7 year old still goes to bed at 6:30 on school nights as he is an early riser too.

LegendaryReady · 06/09/2021 19:53

This is a stealth boast surely Grin

Enjoy it while it lasts OP

HarrisMcCoo · 06/09/2021 19:53

Normal, in my experience. I have four and at that age they all nodded off around that time. Evening to yourself. Enjoy!

Ignore half wits saying it's too early!🙄

Kaffiene · 06/09/2021 19:57

My 3.5 year old has dropped his last nap and we have to start bedtime by 6:15 or he is a teary mess. Asleep by 6:45-7 for 12hrs. I find it really restrictive. I preferred him having an hour after lunch and then going down 8/8:30ish

lionsmum · 07/09/2021 13:52

My DS is almost 10 months & cannot stay up past 6/6:30pm, becomes so grouchy & upset if we try, so what's the point🤷🏼‍♀️ has been this way since about 7 months & I have a feeling he is going to stay like your DS. We've had the comments too about being too early but I just laugh and say yeah, we know. People don't have much to say after that. Like a PP said, if it works for him & you then it works! That's all that matters😊

Ellarain · 07/09/2021 13:56

My youngest son was the same, loved his sleep and still does. He would leave from 7pm until 7am, then go back to bed at 10.30am to 1.30pm everyday. He was always in great form and thrived. Nothing to worry about.

Ellarain · 07/09/2021 13:56

Sleep not leave

Toottooot · 07/09/2021 13:59

My child is similar. Almost 2 and has decided they do not want to nap at nursery - far too much going on to risk missing out on by sleeping. On their days off and weekends we find that they have a big reset nap after lunch and will take longer to fall asleep those nights but after nursery can barely stay awake to 6:30

JaninesEyePatch · 07/09/2021 14:02

Mine used to go to bed between 6 and 6.30 at that age.

Friend of mines son went to bed at 5pm!! And didn't wake til 7am next day!

Do what works for you and don't listen to anyone else.
