Just need a second opinion - chicken pox/pregnancy

Hi, son's nursery has reported a case of CP in the baby room. My son is in the pre-school room.

I'm 17 weeks pregnant.

Son has been fully vaccinated against CP - can he go in tomorrow?

Have you had chickenpox or been vaccinated against it? If yes then I’d send him as normal. If you haven’t then I might be more hesitant.

I'd ask your midwife if possible.

My personal reaction would be a 'no' because being vaccinated against CP doesn't stop you carrying it to others...namely you. However I'll freely admit that's based on personal opinion rather than medical fact - hence why I'd ask the midwife for a more qualified answer because folk on here could be anyone...not necessarily who they claim to be

It’s not really your son- but you- at risk. So what is your CP status? If you’ve had it then you’re not really at any significant risk from CP at 17 weeks pregnant. So yes to nursery.

Sorry yes, should have said. I had chicken pox as a child - no complications

PP raises a good point about checking with your midwife if you’re not sure. But since you’ve asked- I had chickenpox as a child, my eldest has been vaccinated, there was a case in her class whilst I was pregnant and it didn’t even occur to me to keep her home. I wasn’t the only pregnant class mum and as far as I’m aware none of the others kept their children home either. Chickenpox is pretty rampant in this country as the vaccine isn’t available on the NHS so I imagine quite a lot of pregnant ladies that also have older children have been in this situation.

You have very little risk since you've already had it. I had CP when I was 29 weeks pregnant. The doctor told me that if I was at the early stage of my pregnancy or about to give birth (=risk of passing it to the newborn) it would be more risky. Speak to the midwife but otherwise don't stress yourself :)

With my having chicken pox previously, and my son being vaccinated, I think I'm happy for him to go tomorrow.

Phew. I'm shattered.

If you've had chicken pox or are vaccinated then you shouldn't be at risk so send him in. The chicken pox child shouldn't be there. My daughter was vaccinated and didn't get it when it went round pre-school.

Yep, will be sending him tomorrow.

Husband and I have had it in childhood. Son is fully vaccinated.

My eldest had chicken pox when I was pregnant with the youngest
We were all fine.... and youngest got it last year so I doubt it had any effect at all
