nappy free at night - when to try?

DD (2.7) has been potty trained for 5 months but still wearing nappies at night. These were very wet but a couple of weeks ago she developed a nasty cough which meant she kept bringing up her milk (which she has from an easiflow cup in bed)so we stopped giving her milk and now her nappies are usually dry in the morning. She still asks for her milk but I guess its better for her teeth not to have it last thing at night and she just takes a little longer to go to sleep. She keeps asking not to have a nappy on at night - she deosn't like them. I've just got waterproof mattress covers - should I go for it or is it better to wait until she's older and her nappies are always dry? she does ask me to take her for a wee and take her nappy off in the night if she stirs, but does still wee in her night nappy sometimes.

She could have her milk earlier or just do her teeth before she goes to bed.

Ds is at a simlar stage - potty trained at 2.2, still wore a nappy at night (cloth) for some time. We have now changed to using training pants - although we've found that the ones that we got s/h at a sale (Diaperraps) are hugely better than the ones we got for initial potty training. Ds now very happy that his nappies have been packed away and that he wears night-time pants at night - these give a reasonable level of protection although we still do have the odd bed change necessary. The other advantage is that he can get up and go to the potty on his own without assistance which is great first thing in the morning at the weekend!

I would go for it - sounds like she is ready. You might have a few nights of accidents while she gets used to things but don't give up. We used washable waterproof mats on top of the sheets so that if there was an accident in the night just whipped off the wet mat leaving dry bed underneath. From an age perspective dd1 potty trained at about 2yrs 4mths but did not go through the night until nearly 3, dd2 was 2 yrs and 3 mths and night trained about 2 weeks after she was dry in the day. Found that dd1 was actually having her wee at about 6am but was otherwise dry in the night so ended up getting up really early for a week and putting her on the potty as soon as she woke up.

I kept waiting for dry nappies at night for DS, then one night we had run out of nappies so he went to bed without and that was that. No problem.

He rarely wets the bed but he used to call to us to get up for a wee (now just gets up himself and goes back to bed).

Good tip: put a pampers bed mat on top of the sheet, then put another sheet on top, so if there is an accident you just have to wip off the top sheet, chuck out the bed map and put them back to bed.

Good luck.

Thanks, useful tips about the bed mats, I'll try some, I've got a couple of decent waterproof mattress covers anyway as dd tends to wriggle all over the bed. She won't get out and go for a wee on her own though - the lazy toddler won't even get out of bed herself in the morning - she just shouts for us to come and get her when she wakes up! At least it means she doesn't go wandering in the night though. I'll give it a go then! Thanks for the tips.
