Nursery bugs! Please tell me it gets easier

DD has been going to nursery for two months now, and she’s had a constant cold and cough, hospitalised with bronchiolitis, norovirus and this weekend has another sickness bug. Throwing up in the night, then right as rain all day, then sick again tonight! It just feels a bit relentless at the moment!

Please tell me it gets easier? Is it normal to be sick this much? She’s a lockdown baby so worry her immune system isn’t as hardened as it should be.

My 3 year old had a constant cold from nursery at the beginning. It seems to be getting a bit less now but there's reduced children during the hols and probs less catching it from older siblings and going to nursery with colds iyswim. Before the summer hols. He was getting something every week from April until July. I expect it will continue on return. I think with lockdown theres more viruses as once we opened up all the viruses were let out and went wild. That's what the a and ebdrbsaid to me anyway when I took my 3 year old in with croup

I do think it's normal though, luckily we have only been to hospital once and the steroids worked wonders on the croup. We have had lots of sleepless nights tho and we have also caught some horrid bugs ourselves, it's tiring isn't it?!

It lasts about a year and then they seem to get a super power and become immune to everything lol. When my daughter started at 7 months old she caught everything under the sun, it was horrific. Sadly with lockdowns and social distancing I am dreading her starting school as I am sure her immune system will of taken a massive hit and we may have a year of illness again!

Nursery was difficult. Puking, coughing generally unwell all the time. By the time they got to school they were bullet proof. Hardly ever ill.

It does get better but the first winter is horrendous, sorry.

When I had my first child my boss at the time told me it would be six months of hell when they first start nursery, and then it will be fine. He was right - it was six months of constant illness (which drove me to the edge I can tell you) but then apart from a bout of chicken pox when he was two and the odd cold here or there, things were pretty ok. He is now 12 and has the immune system of a rhinoceros.

DS3 on the other hand didn’t go to nursery as a toddler and now (age 6) picks up everything going.

It’s awful but normal, though the norovirus bout was unlucky. It’s equally awful when you catch things from them. I had constant coughs and sore throats. It does get better, much better.

Hi I have been going through the same with my 2 year old. Horrendous- poor thing has had loads of covid tests because of all the temperatures that she has had. Dreading the winter but I also have a school age child who went through a similar stage and now seems to be bullet proof. It's so tough especially because of covid restrictions and have had loads of time off work because of isolating. It will get better but it might take be a bit to go yet- sorry! Hope you get a bit of a break.

CBB2021 · 04/09/2021 18:55

Thanks all for the reassurance! Good to know it gets better and they end up with super strong immune systems!

The norovirus hit me the worst, DH was completely unscathed. I always joke that as the youngest of three he has a cast iron immune system!

It does get better. It’s hell anyway for getting loads of illnesses when they first start nursery. But starting nursery in the current climate is doubly shit because every time they get a temperature or a cough (which is ALL THE TIME) they get sent home to self isolate until the covid test is back.

AliceW89 · 04/09/2021 19:23

Sympathise. My DS has also been in nursery for 2 months and it does indeed feel like illness Groundhog Day. I’m dreading winter, but hoping it might get better after that?? 🥴

MiddleParking · 04/09/2021 19:39

Mine is bringing home bug after bug just now. Her and my husband usually have a couple of off days with a cold while my pregnant self suffers grimly with everything for about three weeks at a time Sad no Covid yet, wouldn’t be surprised if she timed it for my due date…

CBB2021 · 04/09/2021 20:07

Fingers crossed @MiddleParking that she doesn’t 🤞🏻

Well we are two months in so hopefully after six months we will be in a better place 🤞🏻 I am just hoping the winter isn’t too horrendous!

I had this when mine first started school (didn't go to nursery). I remember one winter when they were ill more or less all the time (and, therefore, so was I).
