In general how do people find facilities while out? Today I was diasapointed at facilties in a local cafe. Not overly clean. Even though I was changing a dirty nappy , it felt even dirtier changing it. Thoughts please?

Surley it's about as subjective as asking how public toilets are?

Some will be great others will be dirty and poorly maintained.

It's just pot luck and obviously whilst it's great if places are cleaned thoroughly often sadly if they are left unclean then the liklihood is that another parent is responsible.

It's a few years since I have changed a nappy, but I remember some being grim!! I would often plan my trips out around places I knew would be clean. I would often have those absorbent disposable mats with me (you can buy several from Wilkos for a few pounds, the type you use to go under the sheet of the bed when toilet training toddlers) that way baby didn't actually have contact with the changing table and the mat would be disposed of afterwards. Many a time I have resorted to a changing mat in the boot or back seat of my car.

They don’t generally exist in mens toilets, so I have only used ones in the family rooms, although a lot of those aren’t accessible because they’re often in the womens toilets. Generally grotty (just like your average public loo), bins often not emptied enough, nappies left on the side, straps often dirty on the nappy changing ‘bed’ thing.

I generally used to just do the nappy change squat, often even if there was a baby change ‘bed’ thing as they were usually too dirty to use.

We just change where we can.... no point in stressing ourselves out planning days out about what's clean or has facilities. If I can't change her in a toilet on the floor (we have a travel mat) then it's the boot of the car or outdoors!

Recently we're at the water cress line... all baby changes were unavailable so had to do it on the tiny grimy floor.

FTEngineerM · 04/09/2021 17:47

They’re foul.
I will do anything to avoid them to be honest, car/pram/lap

mommybear1 · 04/09/2021 17:49

Your car boot is your friend right now I found no clean baby change facilities when DS was little so I got a cheap changing mat and we used the boot. I still have a potty in there now just in case and DS is 3 Grin.

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 04/09/2021 17:55

They’re often quite gross. I take a foldable changing mat in the changing bag so I don’t have to put DD down on the mat/surface directly

seaandsandcastles · 04/09/2021 17:58

Absolutely awful. I’d rather change my baby on a bench or the grass or literally anywhere else than a public toilets.

Opalfeet · 04/09/2021 18:20

I normally go and do in the car

AegonT · 04/09/2021 19:46

Usually ok in big shopping centres or department stores. I like the ones in John Lewis in our town. More variable in cafés and restaurants. We occasionally use the boot of the car or the grass at the park (with a mat) but I prefer to have a sink to wet our cloth wipes and wash my hands after.

Brollypackedforscottishholiday · 04/09/2021 19:47

Best to master a quick change over your knee while you sit on a lid down loo ime!!

Runrigdan · 04/09/2021 19:52

They are as variable as any public toilets really. I have been in some very good ones, and some awful ones. I always carry a wee foldable mat in my changing bag anyway so I just put that on the changing table.

If they are really bad I just wait and change them in the boot of my car!

Hungergames1987 · 05/09/2021 20:44

They are grim.... I try and avoid and will change LO in park on grass with changing mat, or back of car. Wherever really 🤷🏼‍♀️ Even done in pram at a push. I avoid it if I can.

iusedtoloveopalfruits1 · 05/09/2021 20:48

I have found most around where i live
to be ok, what really gets on my tits is a baby change with no toilet for me! Like how am i supposed to go pee with a pram if there’s no toilet in the baby change. I am not gonna leave the pram outside a cubicle unsupervised i’d rather piss my pants than do that.

Absolutely. Or you end up using the disabled toilet which doesn't feel like the right option.

I will say at least you can avoid them if needs be with a baby in nappies (big fan of the car boot change here), a toilet trained toddler has been an education in particularly grim toilet trips. 🤢

webuiltthiscityonrockandwheat · 06/09/2021 06:08

I change DD in the boot or the pram. My boot isn't exactly clean but at least I know what the muck is! I keep a towel is the car to put down under her
