Toddler fever

Hi, just looking for some ideas/opinions/advice about my poorly toddler if anyone can help.

He's had a fever in the 39's since 1am yesterday (well today). Nurofen and calpol are bringing it down as far as 38 but he's now started refusing meds (had to pin him down earlier 🙁). He wouldn't let me near his mouth to brush his teeth earlier either which is unlike him. He's drinking water and milk and eating pasta and fruit pouches but that's it.

Does this just sound like a standard virus? Sore throat maybe? Considering taking him to the GP tomorrow if I can get an appointment but don't want to waste their time if it's just a virus.

Any advice would be appreciated (including for how to get meds into him), thank you 🙂

My 2yo just had tonsillitis , seems to be a lot going around at the moment. I would take him to the GP anyway as you said calpol isn't bringing temp below 38 and I'm not sure how old he is.assume bribes don't work?!

JennaPenna · 31/08/2021 21:17

Does his breath smell?
My LO has had tonsillitis and an ear infection in the past couple of weeks, both spiked a temp.
It is worth a visit to GP.
No advise on how to get meds in I'm afraid, we also have to pin him down nearer the end of the day to get them in him.

Can you put calpol in a fruit pouch?

Have you done a covid PCR test?

LakeShoreD · 31/08/2021 21:22

Sounds like it could be strep throat/tonsillitis. I’d see GP ASAP in case antibiotics are needed.

toomuchlaundry · 31/08/2021 21:24

GP would want you to do COVID test I am assuming before rocking up with a toddler with a temperature.

You can be given suppositories to get medicines into children

Thank you everyone, will give the GP a ring in the morning.

Calpol in a fruit pouch could work, thank you @User5827372728

Lateral flow was negative but have ordered a PCR just in case.

Oh no hope he feels better soon. I'm guessing a throat infection/tonsillitis. Could be bacterial rather than viral and may need antibiotics. Same happened with my almost 4 year old about 5 weeks ago and he was given antibiotics. Definitely see GP.

GLTM · 31/08/2021 22:44

Could also be a UTI or something else. I think seeing the Dr before the weekend is a good idea.

Dyra · 31/08/2021 23:10

My DD had what sounds like what your toddler has a few weeks back. It was a nasty throat infection. Course of antibiotics and some difflam spray cleared it right up

HalfBloodPrince · 01/09/2021 12:37

Spoke to the GP this morning who thinks it's just a nasty virus and to see how he goes for now as he's drinking and weeing etc.

Seems much better in himself today. Nurofen has brought his temp right down to 36.8 and he's had a banana and a cheese sandwich today! 😁

Thank you everyone for your help 😊
