How many toys does your 1yo have?

Not sure this is the right board for this but hope to get some answers. I always thought DD had a reasonable amount of toys but every time we go into someone’s house I realise we have almost nothing compared! They people we usually see do have older and multiple children so I get that they have more but I still think the difference is quite noticeable. How many toys do you roughly have? This is a list of what I can think of but I am sure there are other bits and pieces she has that don’t come to mind:

  • wooden trolley
  • building blocks
  • wooden pram
  • donughts type thing to put into a stick
  • stacking cups
  • a couple of wooden toys with wheels
  • silicone cubes
  • xylophone
  • maracas
  • balls of different sizes and textures
  • quite a few dolls and fluffy toys
  • lots of different books (at least 20)
  • pull along toys which also becomes a shape sorter thing
  • keyboard

A couple of more bits And pieces here and there.
Is this enough? She is still in a phase where she seems more interested in home objects than anything else really.

How old exactly? A 12 month old will ay in a completely different way to a 23month old...

At just one that is age appropriate. By two years old they will be doing small world play, building things, dressing up. 20 books is loads, but you could be sick of them in a few months...

@Aroundtheworldin80moves yes, I have loads I want to get her but they are just not age appropriate yet as she is 12 months old.
I am saving some of the books for later but it’s my weakness, can’t resist them! We also speak 2 languages at home so she has a few for each language.

My 1yo has loads of toys but a lot of them were presents. I think less is more sometimes, she definitely plays better when most of the toys are tidied away and there’s only a couple out.

She’s just as happy with a sauce pan and the potato masher as she is with the carefully selected wooden toys and sensory boxes 😅 the toys do make it a bit more interesting for me to play with her though as I can swap up what we use so I don’t go mad with boredom!

I think they just want your attention and engagement rather than toys at this age, toys just offer a bit of structure and a thing to show them.

I do have a problem with buying loads of books though… our house looks like a baby library Blush I just can’t help myself (we also have 2 languages which has gained us some extra ones but mostly I just like getting new ones)

When DD was one she pretty much had nothing but a charity shop shape sorter and 2 or 3 cuddly toys. We lived remotely in a rural place so I had nothing to compare to.

Marghe87 · 31/08/2021 09:41

I agree that all that matters is that they get attention and some objects to explore, not necessarily toys. I think after 18 months they start needing a bit more stuff as the way they play begins to change?
I have bought lots of these toys from charity shops, just can’t get myself to spend a lot o money on stuff she will only play with for a few months.

Didn’t have much at the 1 year old stage as they just don’t play much with it. As they grow abit older it’s tempting to buy much more, they end up still not playing with it though

It's so hard when you compare! We had DD 6mos before COVID and so just as we were emerging from newborn stupor, lockdown happened. I actually feel really fortunate that we had the peace and quiet to do our own thing. Finding it much harder now that are going to play at other people's home and, as you say, comparing our toys to others'. I know it's tricky, but keep your eyes on the road!

DD has newly turned 2. We have similar types of toys to you and she has wanted for nothing! As others have said already, less is more in terms of toys at one time. We have 3 or 4 different toys and a selection of books out on her shelf at any one time, swap them once a week-ish. I keep an eye on what she is interested in and swap over anything that hasn't been played with so much. This keeps things interesting for you both and gives you a stash of toys to call on if the day is dragging.

Birthdays and Christmases are obviously good to add a few new bits and pieces. Second hand toys from marketplace, charity shops, gumtree etc help budget go further. If you are lucky enough to have some family interested in giving gifts, you could have a lfew suggestions up your sleeve.

Join the library if you haven't already - great to supplement the books you own. DD loves choosing new books to borrow.

I also find increasingly that DD is happy being involved in tasks round the house - setting the table, dusting, unloading the dishwasher, putting clothes in basket/washing machine etc.

And one last thought - once or twice we have bought a toy that she has loved playing with at a friend's house and she hasn't looked twice at it at home. Sometimes the novelty of someone else owning it is what makes it more exciting!

DS is nearly 18mo and has started to have more stuff now as he’s old enough to engage with more.

Mommabear20 · 31/08/2021 11:46

My DD (15 months) has about half that amount but over triple the amount of books! 😂 we have never bought her a toy, everything she has has been a gift for Christmas or birthday. We do plan to buy her toys for Christmas this year though as she's now actually playing.

FTEngineerM · 31/08/2021 11:58

An absolute fuck load, honestly it’s embarrassing almost all of them were presents , he doesn’t even know what to do with half of them. I have had to chop it down to 6-7 in his downstairs toy box along with a climbing frame and rocking caterpillar downstairs then the rest are in his room hidden on/in his wardrobe or at the end of his bed.

He’s 14.5m.

16 months here.
Everything fits in a regular ottoman type thing

  • duplo and wooden building blocks he uses the most.
  • books
  • pull along dog, some schleich animals ( prob 10), stacking thing, 3 wooden puzzles, teddies, rag doll, random other bits
  • outside he has sandpit, mud kitchen and trike.
  • collection of pine cones, whisk and egg poachers from kitchen, empty plastic spice jars or pots

He does play or use virtually everything, every day.
