Nappy changing

My DC is 1.5 yo and is a nightmare at changing time. Kicks, screams, rolls over, throws themselves about... you get the idea. And it makes for a really unpleasant 5 minutes to get them sorted every time especially if we are out and about.
Any tips because I was about tearing my hair out this morning

My DD is the same (almost 16 months). I usually give her something to hold like my phone, the nappy cream (except she can open it now 😑) or the nappy sack. Usually keeps her still long enough for me to quickly change her but it’s like wrestling an animal 😂

rosesandsalvia · 30/08/2021 11:29

Do they prefer to be changed standing up? Or change on the floor, sit by the side and put one leg bent over them so they are pinned down, then do it quickly.

SoftPetal · 30/08/2021 11:31

Getting her involved helped my dd. Asking can you get the nappy out, can you hold this wetwipe, mummy needs you to look after this sock while you lie down please. And just silly talk while you do it, "Eww stinky toes/wipe wipey wipe/who's a little smelly bum?"

Give them something they are interested in. Atm my keys do the trick

blackstripe · 30/08/2021 11:35

This is the only time I do screen time as it's just so bloody stressful otherwise Grin.

alexio · 30/08/2021 11:36

Thanks I'll try some of these. Usually holding my phone taking pictures does the trick but the last few days nope!

Pull ups have been a saviour as soon as they started rolling and crawling. Still issues when changing a poo but 90% of the time I can do it on the go easily

squee123 · 30/08/2021 12:04

I just do it standing. Have had to since mine was 7 months as he just can't stay still otherwise. It's easy once you get the hang of it

alexio · 30/08/2021 12:11

@squee123 what about poop? 🙈

I just eerrrr stopped doing nappies, very very slow but basically Elimination communication into toilet training from About a year and DD stopped wearing nappies at home at 14 months and out of the house at 16 months. She's 2.5 now and I know I couldn't potty train her now, she's too difficult Blush

alexio · 30/08/2021 12:32

@olderthanyouthink how did you manage to start that? DC is a silent sh*tter he poops and indicate he's got a dirty nappy until you catch a whiff so I'm constantly checking him

Started with catching easy wees like when she first woke up and then did more and more nappy free time running her to the potty. The first poo was kinda a fluke, she had done her morning wee an then didn't want to get up and did a poo, some pops were timing and some were spotting the face. We basically did the oh Crap method but much slower given her age and her being in nappies part time. Cloth nappies probably helped a bit because they felt wet.

Google EC easy catches and see if you can get started with those.

And most kids don't like sitting on the potty it's weird and cold and hard and new, my daughter started out sat on my lap 😅

ArielFelix · 30/08/2021 12:45

Yep, I feel your pain, my 18 month old is not easily distracted and nappy changes always take an age, especially if they’re poopy nappies.
This picture could be a portrait of our nappy changes for sure!

GrinGrin that picture

squee123 · 31/08/2021 22:07

@alexio poop too. I just make sure he's standing in front of something interesting with some toys or whatever and remove the nappy carefully so the poo doesn't go everywhere. It's actually pretty easy to clean up that way once you get the hang of it x

alexio · 31/08/2021 22:08

@squee123 tried the standing today for pee changes and it was so much better thanks

Put on the TV. You won’t be using nappies for much longer anyway so it’s not a huge issue.
