stick him in a wrap sling and carry on like before. He will love the closeness and you can get on with whatever you want really.

Time for mums and toddlers maybe - he can lie about and look at kids and you can chat and drink tea!

Sounds like you're doing just fine! I think if you beat yourself up about thinking every minute of the day has to be stimulating, educational etc, you are actually being unfair to your child. You would be setting him up to feel that he is the centre of the world, and that somehow you should be revolving your life around him totally. He is a part of your family, so carry on doing all the normal stuff. The housework, shopping, cooking etc all need to be done, you no doubt need time to read, relax, have a bath etc and in due course will maybe return to work. These are all normal everday things which your child needs to get used to. Involve him in everything, sit him where he can watch you and carry on talking to him, and he'll be fine! He may be your first baby, but he's also just another family member.

He's new to the world! If you're lucky to have a contented baby, try not to beat yourself up about it! If he's happy on his own while you get on with other stuff, good for you!

Your baby will let you know when he wants something. Don't worry!

DS2 used to lie under one of those baby gym things, trying desperately to touch one of the dangly bits - kept him amused for ages, that did. As he got older he actually could touch them - it did him for entertainment from c 6 weeks to 4 months IIRC (prob not though )

I'm going to say something terrible here. Stick him in front of the TV for a bit. There, I've said it. I know, I know, what an awful mother I am. But even something really boring, like a footall match, can be really mesmerising for them at that age. Not all day, you understand. Just ten mins or so. Sorry if I've caused offence!

Camillathechicken · 03/12/2007 17:07

he won;t be getting bored at 6 weeks, wathcing your face, listening to you , just bieng around you and people will be enough

a walk , watching leaves and branches moving is fascinating

even a trip to the shop is a new and exciting experience,

you don;t have to try especially hard

also, you don;t want to overstimulate, will make it harder for him to settle to sleep

choosyfloosy · 03/12/2007 17:13

oh god, 6 weeks. Strength to you.

Baby gym
Bouncy chair anywhere you are - ds required being chatted to
anywhere there are other kids or actually just PEOPLE - M&Ts, NCT coffee mornings, parties (now's a good time to throw a few!), postnatal aquarobics - ds used to love this. He'd lie in his car seat on the side of the pool with all the other babies in a row, watching the instructor moving up and down the pool - all the babies with their heads going backwards and forwards together, it was hilarious.
Employ a windowcleaner, that should keep him entertained. And there's no rule that says a healthy afternoon walk with another mum can't end at the pub garden, where they can watch leaves as much as they like

Camillathechicken · 03/12/2007 17:15

very true, choosyfloosy ! whilst baby is portable and not liable to leap out of the buggy and swipe the drink out of your hand, go and have coffee out, or a bite of lunch. then you are both entertained @!

Best advice my lovely mum gave me was " sometimes babies just need to be left be". when they are small everything is new and interesting. If you set yourself up as entertainment mummy you will end up with an overstimulated little bub.
Just try and relax and enjoy.
