How to get sick smell out of car seat?

My toddler was sick in the car and it went all over his seat. I washed the detachable cover at 30C (as recommended on the label) using Ecover detergent, but I can still smell sick Confused

How can I get rid of the smell once and for all?!

Ugh, I'm getting flashbacks to a long journey to Northumberland 🤢

I think we used biological powder to soak it in for a bit, and Dettol spray (cleaner and the aerosol stuff) on all the hard bits. I think we had to use toothpicks on parts...

Biological washing powder, bicarb in liberal amounts!

Baking soda got sick smell out of my couch. Took 2 or 3 days, I covered it quite thick, left it, kept sniffing every now and then, when I couldn't smell sick anymore, vacuumed it up.

Thanks all. Maybe I could wash again and chuck in some fabric conditioner this time? Ecover doesn’t seem to have a strong scent, if any.

Set fire to it

I would say honestly though stain remover soak and then soak in fabric softener and then wash with detergent

cultkid · 28/08/2021 19:54

Ps

Ecover is horrendous use aerial

Ecover is horrendous use aerial

Oh no, why? It got the marks out but definitely not the smell Sad

Use a normal washing powder, ecover doesn't clean as well, it's just better for the environment.

JuneOsborne · 28/08/2021 19:58

I'd put the cover in a washing up bowl and pour on tubs of bicarb so you can't see the fabric.

Leave it a good few hours. Then run some water in the bowl so it's a solution. Let it sit in that for as long as possible.

Rinse and then put it in the washing machine with a biological powder and some disinfectant. I'd chuck proper brown Dettol in the drum with it

Then, when the cycle had finished, I d out it through a couple of extra rinses. And get it in the sun to dry.

Scrub with vinegar. Car will smell of vinegar for a while, but better than sick.

Cupcakegirl13 · 28/08/2021 20:19

You need to wash it at 60 degrees I’ve always washed mine on the temp for sick removal despite it saying 30 only on the label as that temp kills all the bacteria

@Cupcakegirl13 I’m too worried it will shrink at that temp!

Vinegar

Verbena87 · 28/08/2021 20:38

What @JuneOsborne said except I’d add some white vinegar to the water as well. Bicarb is amazing stuff.

Diluted Miltons

Imicola · 28/08/2021 20:58

We've only ever hand washed the cover and scrubbed the straps etc, and the smell never lingered. Maybe we got lucky?

hayley013 · 28/08/2021 21:04

Bicarbonate soda, sprinkle it on, leave for a good few hours, Hoover off, it got the awful smell out of my daughter a mattress and carpet

cultkid · 29/08/2021 06:55

It's just not a strong enough scent for kids I love the ethos but it doesn't get rid of their wee and sick smells and milk smells etc

I would use proper heavy duty like aerial biological with enzymes to break down the biological reasons for the smell and then fabric softener

I don't agree you need to wash at 60 wash it at 20 or it will never go back on the car seat

Also spray car seat with diluted washing detergent leave to dry and then wash off and leave in the sunshine

So annoying my son had this several times

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 29/08/2021 07:15

While you are washing the covers take the whole car seat out of the car and put it out in the fresh air to dry . Give it a wipe all round with disinfectant .
And yes to biological washing powder , it has enzymes that destroy odours

Mintjulia · 29/08/2021 07:17

Also take the base seat, turn it over and clean every nook and cranny with some disinfectant

ParadiseLaundry · 29/08/2021 13:38

As pp have said bio washing powder. But I would leave it to soak for about 2 hrs as it gives the enzymes time to work.
