Waking coughing and crying every 15/20 mins

Baby is almost 10m old. He’s definitely almost cutting some new teeth at the top so we’ve had a couple of days of him dribbling loads. He went down to sleep fine last night but woke up about 11.30pm coughing and drooling again. Since then he’s woken up every 15/20mins coughing and crying 😓 sounds super wet in the throat.
Temperature is normal. And seems otherwise well.

I eventually gave up trying to put him down at 3am and just got up and cuddled him to sleep on my chest upright where he seems much more comfortable.
Is it likely to be his teething causing it and he’s coughing because the drool is pooling in his mouth? 😓 does this sound normal?
He’s only got 2 bottom teeth so far and he cut them without too much bother but I can see 3 that look like they’re about to cut through all at once on the top 😓

What does the cough sound like ? Weird question I know but whooping cough and other childhood illnesses have identifiable coughs .
Or it could just be teething and snot and dribble.
If in doubt ring 111.

My 10 month old just been unwell with pretty much identical symptoms. Negative Covid test so we assumed RSV as keep getting letters about it from DoE and childminder. Plenty of water, calpol and cuddles and buckle up for a few sleepless nights!

@Inthesameboatatmo Definitely sounds more like he’s clearing snot and dribble than anything else. He’s been up since 6am. Runny nose but he’s bright and active and eating fine this morning. No coughing since he woke up so I’m assuming it’s just him being all congested when he’s lying down.
First day back at work after may leave for me today after being up all night with him 😅 but DH will keep a close eye on him today.

Can you raise the head of the cot? That helps a bit I find. That Calpol plug in is meant to be good but I can't stand the smell. Keep up with painkillers.

RSV is a wet cough too so worth keeping an eye on him. Hope you can get some rest - good luck for your first day back.

tiredmama2020 · 28/08/2021 20:03

@Wagglerock he switches ends of his cot constantly during the night so I’m not sure that raising one end would do much for him unfortunately! I’ve got the Calpol plugin for tonight so we’ll see how that goes 🤞🏼

Yeah mine does that too. Just stay still! Fingers crossed for a better night tonight.

Just to let you know that excessive drooling can be because they have a sore throat and unable to swallow it easily if you see what I mean. My DS2 had excessive drooling with a cough, his drool was literally soaking the tops of his clothes, he was diagnosed with croup and given steroid treatment. How is your DS now? Hopefully better, but if in doubt about the drool please get him seen as if there is a lot, it will not be due to just teething.

tiredmama2020 · 28/08/2021 21:13

@Chocolatetrifle DH says he’s been fine today other than being super snotty. Eating and drinking fine. Would only do short naps rather than his usual long ones because he kept getting so bunged up 😓 he’s been absolutely fine since I got home from work other than the runny nose but again after putting him down to bed he’s waking up so congested every 20 or so minutes.
No coughing at all when he’s awake - only when he’s been lying down asleep for a wee while. It’s as if he stirs and the drool/snot has pooled in the back of his throat.

Might just be the snot/pleghm going down the back of his throat when he's asleep that he's trying to clear if he's full of cold bless him, hopefully the calpol plug in will help, try some snufflebabe on his chest too, that normally helps my DD.

Chocolatetrifle · 28/08/2021 21:26

Ah, it's awful when so young and they can't even blow their nose. Sounds like it's just the phlegm. I hope he feels better soon. Keep upright as much as possible. The calpol plug in vapour is great. I put some books at one of the cot as raising it does help or let them sleep on me sitting up for a bit. Hope your first day at work went well and hope he gets better soon and you all get some sleep tonight.

tiredmama2020 · 29/08/2021 05:41

@CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood (I love your name 🤣) @Chocolatetrifle Another rough night unfortunately 😓 hes just so snotty 😓 poor wee thing! He’s managed slightly longer stretches in his cot during the night but most of the night I just sat up with him upright on my chest so that he was more comfortable and could get some proper sleep! He gave up trying to sleep for an hour about 2am and was shouting and laughing wanting to play so I know he’s fine other than the congestion

Ah, poor thing and you too, it's so exhausting when they are poorly. Hope he gets well soon.

How about those saline nasal drops? Hope LO feels better
