Aptimal - lots of dirty nappies

My baby(10wks) has been on Aptimal sine birth he was only having a dirty nappy every 4 days but had been at the doctor and since he was still well in himself then they didn’t see an issue. 4 weeks ago he started having explosive nappies with every feed and some in between at least 5 a day anyway. The gp sent me to the hospital they examined him and said he is fine and maybe that’s him just in a routine with his nappies but it was such a contrast from before. At his 6-8week check my gp prescribed dairy free milk to see if it’s a dairy intolerance, 2 weeks on I would say there are less dirty nappies but no major difference as such, not enough to make me think it was an intolerance. I was to put him back on Aptimal for a further 2 weeks to see if he went back the way however he has been on it for a day and had 6 dirty nappies today not watery but lots of it. I also feel that when he’s taking the last part of his bottles it’s like he wants to drink it but is refusing all at the same time, it’s hard to explain what I mean Confused

My question is should I try another formula and if so what one should I try? I was looking at kendamil and Hipp ? Any thoughts?

He has omeprazole for reflux also if this makes a difference to your suggestions.

Thanks

Kendamil is lovely, it's free from palm oil and vegetarian. I used it with my little one. I would say definitely give it a go.

Thanks, there seems to be a shortage of it at the moment or there was 2 weeks ago when I was looking for it, everywhere was sold out and I had read online it was a nationwide problem. If I could get one to try I could then subscribe online. I really did want to give this one a go.

Just a warning, if he does have dairy intolerance Kendamil would most likely make him worse as it’s made with full fat milk rather than semi-skimmed.

Which dairy free formula did they prescribe? Some are only partially broken down, he could need a different one.

Ah really I didn’t know that. He had nutramigen, although it helped slightly with the nappies I do feel it improved his mood. He seemed quite agitated tonight after his bottle and I hate seeing him like that and wouldn’t like to think it’s me causing it by feeding him something he can’t take but the gp said to try it for two weeks. I think I’ll give it another day or so.

I wish there was a test they could do for working out if they are dairy intolerant rather than trying the prescription milk as it’s not really a definitive answer. He didn’t have any other symptoms other than numerous dirty nappies a day. I just wish he could speak and tell me what’s up with him :(

Does he often struggle or writhe when feeding? Any signs of reflux? Does he have eczema? Is he a sicky baby?

Babyontheway21 · 27/08/2021 23:04

He has silent reflux and on medication for this. We found out he had it because he was upset and when feeding he would try to take the bottle but it was like he was unable to. He isn’t sick at all and no signs of eczema.

My DD had a similar thing on Aptamil many years ago. I switched to C&G and she was immediately better. My DS had been fine on Aptamil but it didn't agree with her.

Babyontheway21 · 27/08/2021 23:26

So there could be hope yet that’s it’s not a dairy intolerance.

Our DS was on C&G when born but he seemed to struggle with poos a lot, he would often not go for a day or two and seem like he was straining a lot and in pain. When he did go it was always explosive, leaking out his nappies etc and he'd cry pushing them out. We tried comfort milk (for colic and constipation) but not much of a difference.

A little over a week ago I changed him to Hipp to see if it was the milk and he's been like a different baby since! He's not been crying/grumpy as much, he's been doing a lot more poos but they're a normal colour/consistency and he doesn't seem in pain getting them out. He also doesn't struggle to bring up wind anymore.
We suspect he has colic so add carobel to it and it really has done wonders for him!

My DD used to scream after every bottle with aptamil and we were amazed at how much poo could come out of someone so tiny. Switched to HIPP and she was instantly a different baby.

Danikm151 · 27/08/2021 23:45

A symptom of omeprazole is plenty of runny poops.
I was told about this before my son went on it. Had to warn nursery about it as more than 2 poos a day they usually send home.
The poo was a lot better than the crying in pain with reflux.

Babyontheway21 · 28/08/2021 04:49

I had heard that about omeprazole but When he was on nutrimigen there were less of them and less runny which made me think it wasn’t that. I’m so confused to whether it is an allergy to dairy or not I’m at my wits end. I have just fed him and he is back to pooing (it comes out at force) when feeding so is that an allergy I just don’t know as he has no other symptoms. I may try buying another milk today and see if there is any difference. I hate to think I’m feeding him something that’s hurting him

So today I got him kendamil and so far he’s had two feeds of it. He’s had the explosive nappies he’s had on the aptimal but I’m guessing it takes a while for the previous formula to leave his system, is that right and how long should I try him on kendamil before giving in and accepting it may be a milk allergy.
