Signs of chest infection in babies? 10 month old has been coughing for 5 days ..

Hey,

My 10 month old picked up something from A&E I am guessing when we went in 10 days ago. There were lots of babies and children with croup. 2 days later she developed heavy cold symptoms. It’s day 5 and her cough was better yesterday but today it has come back. It’s not constant but about once an hour she has a heavy coughing fit. Do I need to get this checked with the doctor ? Her nose is still runny. She seems ok in herself other than this. I don’t know if I should be concerned yet or not…..

She needs a PCR Covid test!

PotteringAlong · 25/08/2021 18:32

I assume you’ve tested her for COVID with a PCR test?

No I have done a lateral flow on her a few times but no PCR. I will go to a drive through sight tomorrow unless she gets worse and has to see doctor

A lateral flow is only effective if showing no symptoms. She needs a PCR!!
She doesn't need to go to a doctor and possibly infect others if she has Covid - test her before you go back to a doctor!

Hardchoices · 25/08/2021 19:05

She needs a proper Covid PCR test how can you not know that!

PotteringAlong · 25/08/2021 19:17

You cannot use a lateral flow test with symptoms.

Come on @Cherir20 , this is basic pandemic 101, it’s not like the rules haven’t been advertised and are well known.

Book her a PCR test tonight!

If you're not double-jabbed you should be isolating until your DD has a negative PCR test.

So long as your daughter doesn’t have a fever and is not struggling to breathe you probably don’t need to worry too much about her. 10 month olds often cough for a couple of weeks after a cold and secondary chest infections almost always involve a fever, usually quite high in children.
If you are concerned about her breathing have a look at the ‘when to worry’ list here: www.blf.org.uk/support-for-you/signs-of-breathing-problems-in-children/breathing-problems-to-look-out-for

Yes, a PCR test is probably a good idea, but the most important thing for tonight is knowing whether or not you need to have any immediate concern about your little girls. As I said, it sounds to me like she has a perfectly normal post-cold cough but if you are worried or she shows the signs on the list above you should call 111 for advice. Hope she, and you, sleep ok and that she’s better tomorrow.
