DD is starting school in September, I have a laundry pen but have a feeling that is t enough. Stamps, labels, sew in which are the best?

I'm I being naive to think I could hand some of the jumpers/polo tops to my son after? I have no idea if our surname is popular or not arghh

I wouldn’t sew in, it takes forever. I get iron in from tinyme, and I love the stickers that you can get from there too- they are great for things like water bottles and never come off.

I have seen the stick in clothes labels though and they look amazing, if they stick!

I don’t see why you couldn’t hand things down, even with the ‘wrong’ first name.

dementedpixie · 22/08/2021 08:35

I had iron and stick on for the early years. Now I use a laundry marker

I buy the stickers on Amazon that go on the silk clothing tags, they're great. Wash fine and cheap

Stikins are your friend! Buy a big pack of them- they can go on everything, all lunch box equipment, shoes etc as well as uniform. Go through the wash fine too. Worth their weight in gold.

HungryHippo11 · 22/08/2021 08:39

I bought a dymo label maker this week on Aldi special buys. £15 plus £3 for iron in tapes. That will do both my girls for years to come - the tape is 4m long so will do about 75 labels.

ItsAChallengingWank · 22/08/2021 08:43

I use markers on every possible label. I put first initial and surname. Never had an issue

CMOTDibbler · 22/08/2021 08:43

Anything cheapish I just write on the label, but the more expensive (like logo items) they are the more firmly they are labelled, with coats/blazers getting extra labels up the sleeves and nametapes very firmly sewn in.
Don't forget to write on the toe end of socks as well

Catawaul · 22/08/2021 08:53

I sew them into clothes to make a hook to hang them up as I think they are less likely to get lost! I have Stikins for things like water bottles and shoes, it has both my DC's first names on the same label, no surname.

Macaroni46 · 22/08/2021 09:03

Infant teacher here. As long as it's named any method will do! You'd be amazed how much uniform is left behind with no name in sight!
Simplest way is marker pen with just surname.

LolaLouLou · 22/08/2021 09:07

I use a more expensive option- a website called
mynametags.

You can personalise them with different colours and designs. I do this because my son has SEN and I hope he can quickly identify his own stuff.

But agree with previous poster a marker pen is fine.

Honestly. I've tried a few mentioned above and the best and easiest I've found is stikins. They are v quickly delivered too. You can use them on clothes and all their lunch boxes/bottles. They stay stuck and can go on dishwasher and washing machine/tumble dryer.

I'm about to order some more.

A tip I got off another parent, if you have more than one kid is to just order the surname. That way, the same stickers can be used for all your DC. However, my eldest is about to go to secondary and several kids with same surname so I will have to go back to full names.

user1471530109 · 22/08/2021 09:12

I've also used just a pen too. Eventually it runs or runs but is totally fine.

Who has time for sewing and ironing in labels?!

Miniroofbox · 22/08/2021 09:12

Stikins all the way. And sharpie on the label.

Ohshitiveturnedintomymother · 22/08/2021 09:12

I bought a personalised stamp and fabric ink which seems to work

Nameswaptime · 22/08/2021 09:13

Stickins name labels are the best! Worth the money.

NameChangeinHaste · 22/08/2021 09:20

And don’t forget to keep labelling at secondary school!
I was sorting out our lost property before the summer, and nothing was labelled!
Parents complain about the cost of uniform, and the cost of replacing, but won’t spend a couple of quid on a laundry pen and get DC to sit down and write their name on all labels!

PenOrPencil · 22/08/2021 09:25

Stamptastic stamp. I have just replaced our first ink pad after 6 years. I got our last name only so that I could use it for both kids.

Travellingraspberry · 22/08/2021 10:19

Stickins! Stay on really well but can also be peeled off if needed, complete game changer

JustPickleRick · 22/08/2021 13:04

MyNameTags all the way! They have never come off any of the clothing I've stuck them too. They've even lasted being washed countless times on his water bottle! I like that you can make them in any design you want. Easily identifiable :)

xyzandabc · 22/08/2021 13:06

Stickins. I bought a big pack when eldest started reception and have just used the last one this year. She's 14 and about to start year 10! So they keep their stickiness well.

xyzandabc · 22/08/2021 13:08

And you can use stickins on bags, lunch boxes, water bottles, pencil cases, instruments, cricket bats, tennis racquets etc etc

TheSmallAssassin · 22/08/2021 13:15

I sewed in, bought one set per child in Reception and then unpicked them and sewed them into the next lot of clothes as they grew, lasted right through to Y11 and will be useful for sewing on to towels, etc at Uni. (I've still got some of my own from school that are good for things you might mislay at the gym)

It does take a bit longer, but you don't have to do it that often, at the beginning of the school year we quite often did them in dribs and drabs. Me and my husband used to race one another and the kids can help out as they get older, so it's a quicker task and teaches them a bit of sewing.

Tinabn · 22/08/2021 13:15

I used sharpies at the beginning of each term to name jumpers and ties when I was a teacher, most of my form needed to name them!

SilverOtter · 22/08/2021 13:17

Stikins 100%

ScrumptiousBears · 22/08/2021 13:18

Mynametags are excellent. Mine have been on things for over a year and still really good. They are washable and dishwasher proof for your water bottles and stuff. I haven't found anything they haven't stuck to.
